Just wondering if anyone had any expertise on dysub printers for personal family photos??

I'm looking at a Samsung SP-2020 at the moment if anyone has any opinions that would be great. I used to request dysub proofs when I was working in advertising as they always produced great quality in prints and I know there will be little comparison between the pro dysub printers and the little 4x6 consumer printers but I'm curious on the quality if any one has any experience on these??

Thanks in advance,

Not sure about dye-sub, but even the lower end Epson inkjets can produce great results, with the right paper. I have the CX4200 that I got new in box for a lot less than it usually goes for, and was pleasantly surprised by the results from it.

It's not the fastest printer by any means, and it's not built to pro standards, but hell...

I took a quick look at Consumer Reports and several of the inkjets rated higher than any dye-sub. The best dye-sub being the successor to the one your looking at, SPP-2040.

Nice, Thanks for the info.

I was looking at the Dysub because I don't really print that much and I have had a few epson inkjets in the past where the ink pretty much dries up in them because of lack of use.

.. and the cost of printing on the dye-sub was almost double that of the inkjet, 0.42 compared to 0.25 cents for inkjet per print.

I have used and still own a Fargo Primera dye-sub. I was happy with it although I didn't have any profiles and my monitor sucked, so it was difficult (to say the least) to get good color match. It would also print using thermal wax transfer for lower quality. It is slow - very slow in dye-sub mode and the replacement ribbons are pretty expensive. This printer is many years old (10?) and cost $1000 at the time. Last time I printed with it I was on WFWG3.11. Don't even know if they make drivers for it any more.

Dye-sub is pretty sweet though - the printer was 200dpi but the results were very, very smooth. No pixelation at all.
