Not a political battle, but I'm wondering how other photographers have handled the varied expectations of their potential clients?

I have recently encountered some potential client that are VERY conservative and things like a naked shoulder are inappropriate. There are also the more liberal clients that would not even bother considering me as a photographer if they only what was acceptable to the conservatives. Unfortunately we seem to be seeing more polarization of these groups rather than less.

Do you just target one market segment?
Do you have two web sites and two marketing campaigns?
Do you just show images in the middle and hope to be interesting without offending?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Show your best work for the targeted audience. By that I mean the business sector you are trying to connect with.

If a potential client takes politics into account when they hire a photographer then I would question the value of the client. Too much baggage.

If you play their game then what's next? Your religion? Your race?

Good luck!

Hi, David-

I just had a look at your site. You do some nice work.

Your site portrays you as a photographer of high school seniors. Now, if the same site portrayed you as a shooter of, say, edgier nudes, of course your clients (parents of high school seniors) are going to worry. I don't think that's a liberal/conservative thing.

If your market is photographing kids, then I think your website should portray you as squeaky clean, positive, classy, trustworthy, (as well as talented of course). Now, some parents, particularly of kids who are already in the fashion industry as models, are going to be more relaxed with edgier work. But not most, I would guess.

Thanks for taking a look donenright!

I did have my url mapped to nusbaum.solomodels.com but after a couple of comments I put up my current site for www.davidnusbaum.com.

While I would like to build a reputation as a portrait photographer, I don't want that known as senior portrait photographer. At the same time senior portraits to provide a decent amount of work in this area so I don't want to ignore it.
