I was shocked and surprised not so much that 2TB of storage is now in the 2000 Canadian price range, but that there is enough demand that Costco.ca would offer it. How many people out there really need 2 TB of personal storage (alright costco has a huge number of business too but really)

Nope don't own any costco stock nor get a cut, just a general for your information.

2TB = 4 x 500GB Hard drives at 220 US Dollars a Peice = 880 US Dollars... now add a controller/Case you could probly build a 4 drive 2TB stack for 1,000 us dollars.

Whats 2,000 CDN 1500-1800?

Very true, althought for me the build in raid, and hot swappable drives would make a difference. Sure it costs 1/3 ish more then buying and building the peices but I am really terrible at making -SURE- I have a backup. I have a lot of pictures that are currenly on one drive only. This would truely be automatic, and recoverable. (yes I know there are backup drives that you just have to press the button, I am someday going to take a picture that is worth 1000.00 and want it backed up)

Yes that's true, BUT many aren't as tech savy as you and I. The complete-box-in-a-box is SO much easier for those type. Then you get the ones like myself that have dealt with enough hardware headaches to not want to do it anymore. I currently have 1 TB at home accessible only by SCP since I botched a Debian linux update and can't get SAMBA working properly again. I'm tired of dealing with that kind of headache. I'll go for a NAS box anyday, preferable Buffalo Terastation PRO.

My new mantra: I love technology when it works. I hate it when it doesn't.

Amen brother, Amen. Exactly why I don't build my own PC's anymore.

500GB USB external drives are about $110 at //www.ecost.com/ecost/search/search.asp?NavID_Search=false&CurDSN=simple&calledfrom=1&incimage=on&Search=500gb+external+&submit1=find
You can always take them out of the case if you want to build your own RAID.

Theres a difference between a drive that works, and a drive that works with minimal failure. 1 yeah i could probly get the specific drives im running 40 bucks cheaper online.

But after many hard drive failures, im skeptical.

Quantum - 7 Failures Absolute junk
Maxtor - Never had one fail..... Maxtor owns quantum now....EEK
Seagate - One failure, Respected name would buy again.
Western Digital, 1 Failure from overheating seems their new SATA Caviar line runs right on the max, in an airconditioned house your fine. Move to the ghetto u need a cooling fan.

Im skeptical about hitachi, samsung things like that I own samsung cell phones their great. I have a Samsung Hard drive it hasnt failed in 3 years of being beat the crap out of... maybe their okay.

LaCiE is a new name to me only seen it the past couple of years still not buying one.

You get what you pay for, and even good equipment fails under normal conditions.

We use a lot of LaCie drives at work, with rare problems, one of which was a problem when first purchased so I was able to just exchange it for a working one.

I also have some Maxstor and Seagate drives, and will probably have more soon.

You mean they are no longer referred to as CONSUMERS? I like to call them cattle.

Wouldn't the perfect "consumer" be a tapeworm?

LaCie has had a 1TB drive for $999 USD for over a year now, and I bought a Maxstor 1TB drive a few months ago -- with the rebate it ended up under $700 ...

What will be really interesting is when the 1+TB drives come in laptop drives ...

What'll be really interesting is when 1TB drives will not be big enough. 1GB was HUGE only 10 years ago.

I can't believe I'm about to say this...

I can remember when 10 MB was considered impossible to fill.

Gods, I feel old.

huh, do you have any links? the largest internal harddrive I've been able to find is this Hitachi (I had seen a review on Tom's Hardware a little while back which is why I hadn't realized it had been released yet)

yeahhh.. those where the days. I saw guys loading games from the floppy and I was going "WOW that is fast!". Now my online connections is faster.

Ahhh, the good old days. Yup, I had a C64 with a cassette tape. I had all sorts of stuff stored on tape. The real pain was remembering where it was.

My first PC has a 40MB hard drive. Boy did I think I was in heaven.
