I want to leave my 580EX in manual mode and trigger as a slave using the ST-E2 transmitter. But, when I switch the 580EX to slave, it automatically goes to ETTL mode? I'm sure it's something simple, but the user's manual is just about worthless.
Has anybody already bumped into this problem?
Thanks, Dave

Press and hold the 'mode' button on the flash. It will switch to manual mode after a second or two.

I cannot be that easy, can it. I poked that mode button a dozen times at least, but never held it.
I could have used this simple solution when I was 1/4 mile into the woods and trying to shoot a portrait with three people staring at me.

| That's why I have the manuals for the camera, flash, and interval timer in my backpack. 99.99% of the time you'll never need it but on that 0.01% it's a life saver to be able to quickly look at page 43, slap the forehead, and say, oh yeah, that's how it's done. |

In this case the lifesaver was a plain old sync cord, but it's a pain to use in the woods.
Point taken about the manuals, I should copy the key pages and keep them with me.
