GPS units are usually proprietary so you have to buy the maps for inflated prices from their manufacturers.

Garmin allows their update map program data to be installed on two different GPS units. So if you find someone who only owns one GPS and has bought the new map data you might be able to share. |

They're actually in the process of discontinuing that practice (only allowing one unit per purchase in the future)... so enjoy that while you can!

I just started about a month ago. I went out last Monday and had a grand old time. It's a great way to get out and take some pictures. You can see some of the pictures at my blog. |

Just got my new toy yesterday...now need to figure out how to work it. It has a base map but that is about it...any recommendations on what to load on it. I would like a good street map with restaurants and such to be able to find. |

City Navigator 8 is, I believe, the most up-to-date, and very good street map.

Is there anything cheeper. I've already way over my spending limit for this. The wife is wondering why I need to buy anything...she thinks it should come with everything I need. |

Honestly, not that I know of. The maps have always been pretty expensive. I think they have to license a bunch of the data and the maps themselves, and that's an excuse for cranking the price up pretty high.
Gonna send you a PM, though...

I have found my first 10 caches by entering the coordinates into Google Maps. Works like a charm! Cheap too... :) |

You probably don't need anything more. The extra maps are nice, but not necessary to get going.
My GPS is real basic with a basic map (main roads and waterways). I can't even plug it into the computer. I manually enter the co-ords and I'm ready to go. |

We did our first geocaching today! We looked for 5 and found 4 of them, all urban caches. I think this is something we'll be doing regularly. It's great fun.

Have fun.. I love it. We've found plenty of side trails and rural areas we never would have ventured into without geocaching. |

We love geocacheing. Here's my youngest son's first cache find.
It's a great family fun time. My oldest son is really into it. Here's one that took us a little while to find. He is pointing at the small geocache on the side of the tree.
edit to add another pic

Hey, that was fun! :D Went on our first geocache hunt today and found "Pirates Treasure"! :P It was a pretty easy find, which was good, since it was just me and my youngest son (5yrs-old). He was SO excited! |

Well today we hid our 6th cache and so far we've found 28 (mostly urban caches). We've started friends on it and really enjoy it.

Found a travel bug in this cache in Campbell River, moved him to one on the 49th parallel. (I forgot to take my camera with me for that one, though.) |

Did 6 today, now at 229 (not that numbers matter...)
Went to places I'd never knew existed other wise, got in the Ohio River, met some Amish muggles and another muggle, saw a waterfall, coal mine, and the clearest water I've ever seen in a stream - crystal clear to teh depth of 4 feet!
And got some excersize too!

I added 9 new states to my list of states I've cached in while we were on vacation the last couple weeks... someday I want to get to all of 'em! (I've cached in 30 states so far.) |
