Hi i'm not sure if i am posting in the right section or not, i'm after some advice on domain names as I have recently moved to Australia and have the opportunity of changing from my old .co.uk address to a new .com.au address.
At first I was looking at something simple like cyphotography.com.au but then started thinking about my logo and as it has three circles in it i was thinking along the lines of bluecirclephotography or bluesquigglephotography
Any thoughts?

Agree with the above.
"squiggle" sounds amateurish...like something small children draw. :-)
Just curious, is there a reason your logo has three circles? If so, think of a domain that goes along with the meaning of your logo and business rather than "my logo has a blue circle in it". I'm not knocking the "bluecirclephotography" idea, I like the sounds of it. I'm just suggesting keeping with your business name and logo. :-) Wait, maybe you don't have a business...in that case, disregard. :-P

cool I can see what you mean about the squiggle sounding amateurish :o)
There is no specific reason why my logo has three circles in it, was just playing around one day using flash and placed three blue circles around the logo that fade in and out alternately and quite liked it.
I don't have a business as such but am hoping I may do in the future, so for me at this stage getting the name right and it being fairly catchy and easy to remember is fairly important? |

Yes, it is important because whatever people learn now is what they will remember and want to search for later. If you choose something now and then change it, people may lose you...unless you keep the old domain and redirect to the newer one...but that could get confusing to people

I think it's also important that your website name minimize opportunity for mispelling - i.e, "squiggel" or "squiggle", or for people to use a plural (or not) incorrectly, i.e., circles, when somone might type in circle), and not be able to figure out why that their mistake is.

hey thanks for the last two comments.
I agree that simplicity is the way forward and obviously something with one word like www.photography.com is going to be the easiest for people to remember and has the least chance of people "mistyping", but with so much competition it's hard to find names that are simple, none cheesy and yet still point to photography.
Coming from the name dewdodesign I realised that it would be good to find a new name that people may type in by mistake. Nobody is going to come across dewdodesign by accident, but something with photography in it and somebody may randomly type in my address, any hits are a good thing! I'm not sure with bluecirclephoto that will happen but I do think it is quite easy to remember.
The other problem I have is someone already owns the domain bluecirclephotography so I would have to shorten mine to bluecirclephoto.com, does this sound less professional?

do you think it is important for photography websites to have "photography" as part of the website address?

another vote for "BlueCircle..."
I had thought about mentioning something like bluedotphoto.com.au but that can easily be mistaken as blue.photo.com.au

i like bluecircle too but unfortunately someone has already taken bluecirclephotography.com and i dont want to step on anyones toes by taking the .com.au version of the same address. So i thought about www.darkbluecircle.com but think it's becoming a bit too long to be catchy and i'm wondering if it should have photography in it but www.darkbluecirclephotography is way too long :o( |

This might have changed recently but I don't believe that .COM.AU is unrestricted - you will need a business under that name. |

to get a .com.au you need to have an ABN ie. a business

You might go for both keep your current name, atleast as long as you can let people know its been moved and then own both the new name and then the blue circle whatever.
But that depends on your costs.

Yeah .com is unrestricted - have at it. I actually like the commercial domain been restricted but it has it's down sides. |

I'd consider the following: CYanPhotography.com or CYanPhoto.com
a) it's fairly simple and easy to remember
b) it's a play on your initials Christopher Yates and one of the three primary colors
But that's just me...

I like it, my only hesitation would be the fact that i'm sure there are some ppl out there that do not know how to spell cyan, like they'd spell it sian or syan or something so that would be the only thing that puts me off, but it's a good suggestion.
I was thinking about redyellowblue.com but it's already been taken ;o)

No worry, there are quite a few out there who can't spell photo.
Cyanfoto.com (or european)
Syanfodo.com (American Public Educated)
Then ask yourself, will the latter make enough money to even hire you? Probably not...so no need to worry about such lost clientele?

Figure out what type of photography you want to specialize in and target that with your name. It will be easier to remember and help in web searches (I bought hireimagination.com, but I haven't created the site yet).
Consider shorter alternate words for photography (images, memories, scenics, vision, etc.), and you'll have better odds of finding a name that isn't taken. |

so after weeks of hard thinking I've finally purchased the new domain name www.blueriverphotography.com
I hope it reflects the route I wish to travel down, being nature and landscape photography :o) Just glad I don't have to think about it anymore, it was quite hard work as most of the ones I liked had already been taken hehe |
