Honestly due to vertical resolution of 19 inch wides id consider a 20.1 Inch which can be had for 280-350 dollars. Thats only personally because i wouldnt want to give up 1024 pixels of height that my 17 inch 4:3 provides.

20 is great. Do you have any brand/model in mind? |

I have the Dell 2007WFP. It's 20.1" and it rocks. I don't know what it runs by itself, I got mine with my new system... |

I strongly second the recommendation for the Dell 2007WFP. It's a 20" widescreen, and you can pick it up new for ~$350. |

I could suggest a "LaCie 321 LCD-monitor", but you need to have some budget for it. Must say, I'm really pleased with it. |

We use a Dell 20.x inch wide at work for drawing / sortoff CAD stuff. I like the quality of the pixels, but I do not like the lack of vertical resolution and prefer the 19 inch 4:3 standard screen that is hooked up to the same computer (one is on the desk, the other on the drawing table). If I had to choose I'd get two 19" 4:3's and I would not buy them from Dell.
For photography I'd look at Eizo or Apple screens.

I have a question about wide screens...Do they distort everything you see? I have heard from people that if you have a picture on the screen it stretches it sideways. I have never owned one before. I am trying to decide between a wide screen and 2 19" setup on a duel monitor system.
Let me know your opinions
Thanks! |

If you have the Native resolution of the moniter set NO.
if the moniter's res is 1280x800 and you set it to 800x600 yeah umm its gonna distort.
ALL LCD's have one native res set it and forget it. |

You may want to look at NEC's offerings. Check out the 2070NX model which has the matt screen. I am saving my money for THIS BABY which has a glossy screen, and has been raved about in DPReview's PC Talk. Colors are excellent and the screen gives very rich dark shadows. The only downside to glossy screens that I know of is that you need to view them in darkness because of the glare of light reflections. What ever monitor you get, make sure it's and S-IPS panel. |

ALL ATI and nVidia cards currently in production and for atleast the past 8 years will support any off the wall resolution larger then 320x240 and smaller then its max res.
It just doesnt always show up in the windows controls. On ATI cards u just go into the catalyst control panel under advanced. |

If you're looking at two different aspect ratios the perception of the photo will be different, native resolution or not. A 640x480 image on a 1280x1024 monitor is going to look squished if you're used to viewing them on a 800x600 monitor of near equal physical dimension. |

Hmm now you make me want to call up everyone i know and get a monitor test going lol.
I have a 17 inch LCD - 1280x1024
Laptop with (unkown size) - 1024x480
29 inch CRT (Viewsonic/Sony 72 DPI) - Max res 1024x768
17 inch nokia crt we can user a few different res's.
I need some more flat panels.
The only issue I have is games that dont play on wide screens, WIth laptops they use a portion of the screen, desktop lcd's they stretch it... why is that? |

Have you checked sites like widescreengaming.com? Maybe there's a hack or patch available to get the display as you like. |

Well id be going more into Emulators and emulating games. I also run into problems where as Final Fantasy 7 runs best in 1280x960 which would distort on a 1280x1024 LCD.
That is the only thing i miss about tubes and for the record I have my game discs.
As for widescreengaming.org yes i know of them and I noticed they have a "hack: for Fear... which does not need any modifications for widescreen resolutions LMAO..... some people over do themselves. All they do is edit an INI file or something which BTW is what the 3d config menu is for.
But let say i ran the emulator or even say a game on a 17 inch Alienware laptop in 1280x960 it would center it in the screen and not use 32 pixels at the top or 32 at the bottom.... On my desktop moniter it stretches to fit.
