Canon's new S5 IS gives reason to throw away the DSLR.
It has a 12X zoom, so you don't need to carry around all those SLR accessory lenses.
Fast ISO, wide aperature, and a hot shoe. If it has the fast shutter release like its predecessors then this is the perfect camera. |

It doesn't say it is, so I'm going to assume that it's not an APS-size sensor. Could be, though.
Smaller sensor == more noise. Or so they say. |

The S3 model is already very noisy at 400 ... and I find the shutter-lag as bad as most P&S cameras. But, those are compromises I knowingly accepted in exchange for it's incredible versatility.
The widest it goes is 36mm (35mm equivalent), which isn't too wide for some uses; an add-on 0.75 Wide-angle lens is available to take it to 24mm ...
Hot shoe is a valuable addition.
What happened to the S4 IS? |

yup, the hotshoe just made the S5 IS a more attractive camera than the G-series. And regarding what happened to the S4, well it is the same as what happened to the G4 - non existent (asians dont like the number 4) |

From Amateur Photographer(why there is no S4IS):
"the truth behind the leap from 3 to 5 is one based on cultural superstition — in Japan, the number 4 is considered unlucky. This is because the pronunciation of 4 — “shi†— is the same pronunciation as death. This is the reason why the EOS range jumps from the EOS 3 to EOS 5, and why the latest IXUS digital compacts bucks the trend of the IXUS v2 and IXUS v3 models by becoming the IXUS 400. Indeed, to find a Canon camera with a model number 4 you have to look back as far as the 1950s to the Canon IV."

Sorry no reasons that i read to throw out my d70s and it is and entry level dslr with 6mp. sure the zoom and hotshoe is good but 15s is the longest shutter speed. only shoots jpg 3.4mb is the biggest file and the list could go on. also my mum Nudibranchdoes own the s3, and she likes it. |

Funny, since my dSLR gave me a reason to throw away my S3...
For the size, you might as well be packing a dSLR, the S series sure aint compact, thats for sure.

or you could lose 1mp and the hotfoot and go with oly 550uz
of course it also doesn't have the flip out lcd either but a bit larger lens range. |

Is that Oly for real? 15 frames per second, ISO to 5000, the 18x zoom? I liked my Konica A200 with its own anti-shake, 7x zoom (28- 200mm equivilent), the flip out monitor, and unlike the Canon could also shoot in raw. Also had hotshoe for external flash if you wanted. I just started to get a little frustrated at the quality of image I got. I loved the easy to carry all- in- one package. But it isn't made anymore. Konica is now Sony.

I believe that the number 4 is considered bad luck, something to do with death. |

The S3 IS has 12x zoom. I don't want higher ISO (already too noisy at 400) I want more range on shutter speed and aperature. I DO want the hotshoe, though. |

Can I use it to hammer nails in a pinch. I know my D200 can. |

I had the Canon G5, which did have RAW mode. Unfortunately, it was so slow as to be all but unusable. Shooting in RAW would lock up the camera for several seconds while the file was being written to the card. |

Even better can it hammer a D200 into pieces like a 1 series Canon?
:-)

I see nothing in that to want me to toss my little canon in the trash.

If anything, the S5 is too much like a DSLR to make me want to buy it. It's roughly as big and bulky, without a larger sensor and a host of other features. |

I had a powershot G5 before my XTi and loved it, no real issues with writing RAW to the card though. Could be because I allways used high speed cards...
