Looking at some rather inexpensive computers to replace my aging home-built beast (which I love dearly, particularly all the room for hard drives!) Vid cards - NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE versus Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. I don't game, I just edit. Anyone know if one or the other of these is preferable? The difference in processors on the two boxes is whether you prefer AMD or Intel. Same amount of memory, same drives. |

I personally go with nvidia in all the boxes I build. They are great cards and nvidia's drivers although sometimes buggy are better than most of what else is out there.

I'd go for the NVIDIA card, but, to be honest, for 2D stuff, it won't matter much. |

Thanks, guys. I prefer AMD to Intel for processors, too, so that makes it easier. (Though if pressed, I couldn't tell you why!) |

Heh a year ago you could get a Ati X700 for 70 bucks. Which beats out current X1300 and some X1650 models.
Dont worry about video ram. I did a test on my X1300 with 512MB of DDR2.
No matter how little or how much was loaded into photoshop it used NO ram on the video card.
The intel i710 3 years ago was enough for me. Im sure either card will do for photoshop. Its mainly gonna be the 2D efficiency of the processor. Since your not gaming.
(Note to gamers X700/X800/X850 better then X1650 lol)

From what I've read, ATI is better for 2D work, but probably not that much different than the NVidia offerings. If you like AMD better and you want an inexpensive system with onboard graphics, AMD/ATI just came out with a new chipset (the 690G) which is at least the equal of the 6150 chipset. It uses ATI x1250 graphics processor and is slightly better in 3D than the NVidia. I believe it's also Vista certified, if that's important to you. |
