I guess I'm just worried that if, for example, 300 people withdrew their entries this week I'd end up nearly last. <cough> |

acctually I am a part time teacher in the evening... now not that I do this with every student, or all of the time on a regular basis.. as I pick and chose carefully when to apply this method... but if a student bombs a test because he or she did not study, or earns a 0 because they didn't do their homework, I have been known to say grades out loud... public humiliation has a wonderful way of inspiring someone to do better... and since this is a public forum, and your entering the contest, then it's only fair to accept whatever criticism falls your way... the best thing to do is to embrace it and learn from it... then you will grow and become a better photographer... in my own humble opinion of course... :o) |

If all the bad shots are removed, someone with a decent shot is going to feel really bad when they come last.
If you're too scared of criticism, you shouldn't enter. |

Public humiliation can lead to tormenting from other students and can lead to low self esteem. I speak from personal experience. Not always a good idea |

I agree bigsmiles. Thats why I said, "I pick and choose carefully, when to apply this method". Either way, this being a public forum, we all open ourselves up to that... I think there is even a little box you have to check when you submit that says you understand the rules and such... sigh, I know I haven't done much to make ya feel better... but heck, don't feel too bad, the macro photo I posted is the first photo I have submitted that I was happy with... and it is not doing very well either... but hopefully I will learn something from any comments I get... we shall see

I"m learning to agree to what some of the commenters are saying. My image is a little busy. I need to figure out a way to make my background more out of focus and submit it for critique later on.
I'm very adamant about public humiliation having seen the ugly side of it. Some kids take better to it than others. Kids with low self esteem can feel like they're worthless/helpless when faced with public humiliation. |

That is sort of my issue with commenting on low scoring photos. I have a feeling that those shots aren't getting a lot of positive feedback, and I don't want to add to the misery. I'm usually pretty honest with the comments that I do leave - probably too honest at times. If I don't feel like I have anything nice to say to redeem my comment then would you really rather have the criticism than not? There are always several shots that just shouldn't have been submitted, and I can explain why I feel that way. I'm just not convinced that the photographer would want to hear it. |
