Let me think about it - I might edit the first post of the nomination thread and put thumbnails there. It will take awhile anyway.

Hi everyone.

I'm back from visiting my family in Atlanta. :) It was a great trip, and my new niece is, naturally, the most beautiful baby on the planet.

On the other end of various scales is my grandfather, who'll be 93 on July 3. He asked me to take his portrait so he can give copies to everyone.

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this before I order 30 4x6 prints. :)

Thanks!

Lee: two tenets of Team Suck occurred to me reading your posts:
1) This is a very large tent - there are people who disagree with each other on almost every aspect of photography, how and whether to compete on DPC, etc. But we all support each other's efforts.

2) This is very much an international group. I don't know why there are some Americans who write off non-Americans or vice versa, but we don't do that here. So please don't jump to that conclusion.

For those of you who know that B&W really isn't my forté, I would love to have some feedback on this shot from the GTG on Sunday.

Please comment - only got one number during voting :-) Thanks!

Comments not required - my Free Study was a month long visit to some new little guys at a pond. I figured one or two folks might enjoy watching them as they grow up - I know I have. Alas, it may well be one of those "you have to be there" kinda things, but just for your viewing pleasure, here be more ducks!

Kelly, that's the woman who left me her vote only, but when I PMed her, she expanded it. So I suggest introducing yourself via PM. :) I left you a comment.

I'm on cloud nine right now because not only did Posthumous like my artsy free study shot, but I sold a print on DPCPrints. That's four now. :)

Congratulations! You're the first I've heard of anyone selling a shot on DPCPrints. Do let us know which one sold. No let me guess ... a night shot of some D.C. monument.

P.S. I left you a comment on Grandpa Meyer (edited).

Me too ... me too ... I also would rather see the OMGWTF!

:)

I can't wait ...

(Well as long as it does not involve cultural clashing or fighting or violence between cultures ... I am hoping to see none of that)

LOL it seems there will be some stiff competition for it in this challenge, what fun, I can't wait to vote on this one.

I do think we need a MVP award, and I nominate Mary and Rob for such. Mary for keeping us all in line and on track as far as Oobies, Yappies, who did what, etc, and Rob for taking the who did what part and automating it for us.

Nice shots - I left some comments. I'm a sucker for duckling brand cuteness, but there's a part of me that dreads watching them, because of the high mortality rate these poor things are subject to - one day you see mamma with 9, next day she's with only 3... They're so fragile and vulnerable you just want to take them all home and keep 'em safe.

So far, there are still nine of 'em, which I will admit surprised me a bit. They're getting to the seriously fat, dumb, and happy stage. They'll chow down for awhile, then flop in a big pile o' duckies and spread out, feet splayed everywhere, and just snooze.

I'll check in on them again this weekend, most likely. I've come to enjoy my little visits. I will say I haven't seen the Mallard chicks the last two visits, though. There were five of them and I don't know where they've gone.

Does anyone here know what kind of ducks these guys are? Or if they're even ducks??

I'm going to guess Egyptian Goose, based on your shot:

See the little black line in that white patch on her back? Now look at:

//www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/e/egyptiangoose/index.asp
or
//www.oaklandzoo.org/ATOZ/azegoose.html
or
//www.birdsofbritain.co.uk/bird-guide/egyptian-goose.asp

With the patch around the eye, and the varied colors on the tail feathers, too - this is the closest match I could find. Web mentions large concentrations outside Africa as being only Great Britain, but the good thing about ducks/geese is you can usually get yourself an exotic species and plop them down anywhere with a pond and they'll get along just fine doing their ducky/goosey things. Maybe your German goose is an Egyptian, or a hybrid of Egyptian with some other type.

Ok, so that's my geeky, obsessive contribution for the day. :)

By gosh, I think you're right! I think they're geese, not ducks, and goslings, not ducklings, but I am not going back and changing all my titles. :-)

Thanks for finding that - I was doing some searching last night but I guess I needed to expand my search to include geese, huh? And from what I read on one of those links, they can have clutches of nine, so maybe they are all from one mom.

The things you learn at DPC!

My team suck friends I enjoy living vicariously through you all. I have such a dull life that it is fun to come to the forum and read about all the different places and things that you all do. I haven't done any challenges in the last week as nothing is catching my mind. I'm out shooting for b/w and trying to get better at post processing. I have a idea for May's free study I hope that it turns out. You all have been a true inspiration to make me a better person. Thank you.

She's a lucky mom to have 9 survive - that's usually why they have such large broods, to ensure that at least 1 or 2 make it through. There must be some kindly groundskeepers around her keeping an eye out for potential predators. Don't worry about the titles - it's only in that shot with the pigeons that the larger relative size is noticeable - most people will think "duck" when they see them! :)

*ducking nervously*

Little late in the game,but Deb, don't you DARE stop submitting your wonderful pics. We need to see what the world looks like through your eyes.

Well most people seem to enjoy my Dr Seuss shot (still around 5.1) and I got a most interesting comment from a baghead who gave me 3/10, but at least told me why in a lyrical fashion! How about an award for the most interesting/unusual comment?

Now what to shoot for the album cover...hmm....think I'll just flip through the dictionary for the appropriate letters then get Octopussy to choose words for me. He should enjoy that, he likes to use his paws.
