I am new to digital photography and have a question about sharpening raw files. The only software that I have is what came with the camera. I shot a rowing event last weekend in raw and have used DPP to crop and adjust exposure and I like the way it worked. It seems that I cannot sharpen in DPP before I process to jpegs. Is there something that I am missing? |

No, you got it right. Sharpening can be done as you batch process during your jpg conversion, but not as a batch any other way.

I do not see any utilities in DPP for sharpening. I have version 2.2.0.1 |

Normally you will want to save sharpening until the last step in post processing rather than as a part of pre-processing or RAW conversion. Not always, though.
Most sharpening is done as a step in producing output from your post processed master file. The main reason for that is the amount of sharpening you need changes depending on the type of output you are producing. There is less sharpening needed for web graphics than for large prints. Unless working in a studio with one setup or in situations where all the images are exactly the same then sharpening will likely differ uniquely from one image to the next. There can be general similarities but each image is different.

Thanks Cindi and Steve. See if this makes sense. If I shoot jpeg in the camera the camera does some sharpening without any input from me other than to make an over all sharpening setting. I would like to do the same in PP. I just do not see any sharpening options in DPP. |

I'm probably not the best person to comment on these things. I prefer to do all my sharpening in post processing and none in-camera or conversion.
I can see what you are after though. If you have Photoshop you can setup an action that will batch process that for you using your normal settings if you want. That might be your best bet.
