OK so last week my desktop shut down. When I power it up the CPU fan turns on then the power shuts off?
My first thought power supply cause it isn't even starting it's check.
Well I installed a new power supply today and same thing.
I went and unplugged everything from the power supply except from the motherboard just to make sure it wasn't anything attached to it. I then also took out the 2 RAM chips(one at a time) still same thing. So I have eliminated everything but the motherboard or processor. Anyone know which one it would be or if not anything else?
I am trying to buy something the same to keep from buying new ram. I guess I should add my current RAM chips are PC2700

| Sounds like the mobo has given up the ghost. You can get a replacement mobo at any computer retailer, they will recommend a mobo to suit your RAM. Also check out ebay? |

It sounds to me like there could possibly be a problem with the CPU overheating. Let me explain, Ive had a few puters come across my desk where the HSF (Heat Sink and Fan) was not seated on the CPU properly causing the CPU to immediately overheat and subsequently shut down right away. I have also seen where if the HSF fan did not speed up fast enough the BIOS figures there's a problem with the fan and shuts down. You could try changing out the HSF fan with a good working one and if that doesn't work you can try to reset the BIOS and see if there is an option to disable the HSF fan check.

| Have you re-seated the CPU by chance? |

Had the same thing happen to me in Jan. Turn on CPU then the fan runs for about 2 or 3 seconds and the system shuts down. I was hoping it was the power supply but knew it could of been the motherboard. Lucky my problem was the power supply, not the motherboard.
If you have did all that you say then I would say a motherboard problem.

Swapped the fan. No change.
I am thinking it is either the processor or motherboard
