well I went 16 months with my XT and got the dreaded "error 99".... I went to a very knowledgeable camera guy who said that error 99 means im "Screwed". He tried many different things... but nothing. SUCKS!
So my positive spin is that I can upgrade... since I don't want to go 8 weeks w/o a camera and not even know what the problem is...
So any thoughts on which is better...don't know much about the 30d..... money really not an issue so i'm trying to decide between the Xti or the 30 d......
thanks again!!!! |

Well, first things first... error99 is just the camera's way of saying "something is wrong, but I don't know what it is." It can be something as minor as dirty contacts on a lens or on the body (clean 'em and try it again) or something serious that the camera can't pin down. Don't give it up for dead yet, first make sure it's not the lens or the lens or body contacts. |

Sounds like you've covered the bases. Well, time for a trip to Canon. If you call them, very politely explain the situation and how you are disappointed that such a thing would happen only 4 months out of warranty, they *might* just agree to fix it within warranty. They don't have to of course, but they have replaced an item outside of warranty for me. |

That may be a bit of a crap-shoot. I've heard folks get their cameras back in a week, and I've heard some very long times. I guess it all depends on shipping times, availability of parts, and whether they happen to be very busy or not so busy.

Well if you get it fixed great! But if not, to answer your title question, I'd get the 30D.

I had to send a camera away and I put a note with it to let them know that I would need it ASAP for a photo shoot( it was the truth) and had it back in a week. Out of this week I could guarantee that it spent at least 4 days in postage. So if you explain with the camera that it is urgent they may listen. I also spoke with the repairs department I sent it (directly to Fuji) personally, so they knew to expect it. I now have a 30D |

I have nothing but great things to say about Canon's service center. They replaced a cracked rear lcd, replaced ALL shutter mechanisms, cleaned the sensor and gave it a complete cleaning/testing and I had it back in 4 days. Of course, I took it in in person and picked it up, but still was very fast. Warranty had expired, but all I paid for was the cost of the lcd, they didn't even charge me labor.
As for the XTI or 30D, I'd go for the 30D as well, it's a great camera. Then when you get around to it have the XT looked at and/or fixed for a backup. |

I'd seriously consider sending it in.
Now if you're set on a new body, then the 30D is much nicer in my view.
I have both and the new sensor on the XTi is very noisy when shooting in RAW. I'm pleasantly surprised by how little noise the 30D has after shooting with my XTi.
