Complete newbie, as you can see by the post count.

I have a Canon powershot sd630 with which I've been quite pleased. I now have a new Rebel XTi and am now ready to save the files to the computer.

The problem is that they both use the same IMG_**** naming system, so the files want to overlap each other. Is there a way to change the default file name of the images? Is there any quick way to rename about 200 images that I'm trying to download?

If not, how do I get them onto the computer. I was going to try to put them in a different subfolder (i.e. "XTi" in my "2007" folder) but that seems to be a rather inelegant solution considering we're often going back and forth between cameras. I'd like to have all of this year's images in the same folder, placed in chronological order.

Any thoughts?

There are applications that will do batch renamimg of files. You could download to a temporary folder, run a batch rename, and then move them over.
There are also programs like Adobe Lightroom, that will rename to your specifications as they are transferred from your card. The downsides to this strategy are (1) the cost of Lightroom, and (2), the learning curve for Lightroom. If you don't shoot in RAW mode, this may be overkill and unnecessary expense.
There may very well be other possible approaches that haven't occurred to me...

Batch rename as you download to the computer or afterwards. There's no way to change the default file name in camera that I am aware of.

Thanks. Why am I unable to batch rename in Explorer? I select several files, right click, select "rename" but it un-selects everything but the last image.

I know in the past I've been able to batch rename, but it's not letting me do it now. Am I missing something? If I can't rename the entire selection then I may be stuck with trying the subfolder. Will the subfolder idea work? (i.e. will it keep the previous files--despite identical names--if they're in different folders?)

There's one very sneaky way around it. Set one camera to the Adobe RGB color space. That changes the file naming from IMG_1234.JPG to _MG_1234.JPG. Now they are technically different, and can be stored in the same folder. The editor must be set to convert files to sRGB upon opening though.

Wow. Sounds interesting. I just read up on it in the owner's manual. It sounds like a setting I better stay away from. I'm a rank amateur with four small kids trying to take some quick snapshots and get them to bed. (I'm working this thread while giving two little girls a bath.)

Why can't I batch rename in Explorer? Am I missing something? I know it used to work (as I described above.)
