On my setup the mouse wheel zooms without touching anyother keys, and in fact pressing ALT makes no difference. Not sure if that's just my set up ?

Yes, you can set that in the prferences, that is how mine is set now also. |

Since your discussing pallets and their placement and customization. It would be wise to mention saving your pallet arrangement.
When Photoshop 'resets' itself (which mine does frequently) you can go back and reset it without loosing a lot of time rearranging it again.

Must be a preference as wavelength pointed out. Mine is setup so ALT+Wheel=Zoom and wheel only = scroll up & down.

Quick update: my internet connection went out last night and has not yet been fixed, so I was not able to post the new topic.
