I was waiting for a flight out of Charlotte a couple of days ago when some folks sitting next to me starting laughing and pointing out to the tarmac. A plane had just departed for Pheonix and they noticed something laying at the gate where the plane had just departed:
A zoomed view
Sorry for the quality - I only had my 50mm lens with me.

Arrive early, get your luggage checked in first and it usually gets loaded first. You're less likely to have it go missing then.
This may be just a myth. |

I was watching the guys load luggage onto a plane that I was on one day. One of the tags got ripped off the luggage handle and blew away. So that suitcase had no destination tag on it....not sure what happened to it, but checking in first would not have helped you there.

| Funny you should say that. Some years back I was at Heathrow in London on a runway bus taking passengers out to board a 747. As we drove along I noticed a a few cases and bags lying on the runway road. I thought that was pretty darned odd. Many hours later I arrived in Beijing. I waited, and waited at the carousel until all the passengers had picked up their bags and exited customs. It was then I found out that my baggage had been "lost" in transit. (Note - pack toiletries in hand luggage next time). I guess my luggage had been dumped on the runway at Heathrow. Sadly one of my bags had in it a contract for the UK prime minister's book. The baggage followed days later. My like of British Airways dimished at that time. |

Yes, it's sad the way airlines treat customers and their luggage.
On returning from Mexico last month, I realized that baggage claim tickets are simply ignored nowadays. They pile everyone's luggage on a conveyor belt and let anyone that wants a bag pick it up and walk away. Nobody checks to make sure the bag(s) you carry away actually belong to you by asking you for baggage claim tickets. There's nothing to stop thieves from walking in, grabbing whatever they want, and walking out with it. Even an honest person might mistake your bag for theirs and walk out with the wrong one.
The customers themselves get treated a lot like cattle in a stockyard.

Not in this age of air security. I used to fly with a single carryon regardless of home long I was expecting to be away. Now I can't go anywhere without having to check a bag just because of toiletries. |

I've only flown once... and they lost my only bag. :( I confess, I wasn't surprised.

Yes, I had a bag temporarily 'stolen'. I used to take my saxophone with me on business trips. Most hotels would find a conference room for me to practice in at nights for something to do. Anyway, on one trip, I got to the other end, and the old story of watching bags go by for 30 minutes, only to be left alone in the baggage hall watching an empty belt. Anyway, I was just about to go to the claims counter, and a guy came running back in from outside with my saxophone!
He was a roadie for a band that was on my flight. The airline had been very thoughtful, and loaded all the instruments together, and the roadies just picked them all up and loaded them in the truck. Fortunately one of the band members was watching them load the truck, and said "Hey, that's not one of ours!", and sent it back into the hall!
I was very grateful to get my $2,000 sax back again! Thank you for honest people!
