ok, Truegsht is now in teamzombie. was that what i was supposed to do?
05/02/2007 02:32:02 PM · #1502
it's odd, the more i look at it, the less happy i am with my trip entry. i realy like the idea, but the final result is not that great. the finishing of it could be much better, more subtle, and generaly less high school art project like.

yet, it's looking to be my personal best. wierd. and the ones i'm really proud of, get pooed on.

ah well, take what ya can get, eh?

LOL - maybe they are yesterday's questions. I never did read them through, but keep getting e-mails with questions listed.
BTW - Can't wait to see your triptych, Christian! And also Don's, Jeffrey's and Hippychick's - others on which I evidently commented.

ok, I am totally pissed off about one of the questions in the dpc trivia game. it was a completely subjective question about what you would do in a certain situation. so I only got 9 right. what the hell? grrrrrr

A little off-topic here, but something I wanted to share, especially for the other ladies on Team Suck:

Today I went to lunch with our lawyer/mentor, an older gentleman named Bob who has an office in downtown Charleston. The office is an old southern plantation style house on a side alley that dead ends and has tall brick fences surrounding it. The parking lot is past the office in an area of the alley completely concealed by the street.

We walked to lunch, and upon our return, I said goodbye to Bob at his office door and continued down the alley to my car, a small convertible that had the top down today. I was surprised that a young-to-middle-aged man followed me down the alley and approached me. He started to ask me a question, and my cell phone rang. I took the call and motioned for him to wait with my hand. He said, "take your time, I'll wait." There was something about his eyes / demeanor that made me nervous, even though he was very well dressed - in preppy clothes - had a cell phone clipped to his belt, looked the part of the Charleston businessman, so I took a few steps back from him.

When I got off the phone, the man started coming very close to me. I backed up again and asked him what I could do for him, aware that I was getting close to being trapped in a corner and that my car offered no refuge, since the top was down. He asked me if I could give him $7.00 for parking and stepped even closer.

I told him no, that I didn't have any cash, and made like I was going to dial my phone - and discovered to my consternation that I was unable to get a signal, even though I was just a few feet from where I had gotten one before! So I pretended that I had gotten through to my husband, and said in the fake conversation that I was nervous because a strange guy had me trapped in an alley. Evidently it freaked the man out, because he turned on his heel and walked very quickly away.

Luckily, just about the same time, Bob came out of the office - he had seen the guy coming up the alley and later told me "something just didn't feel right." We both got even more alarmed when we realized that there is no parking garage in the near vicinity.

I'll never know what the guy's story was, but just wanted to pass along as a reminder to keep your cell batteries charged, keep on guard when walking alone, especially in an alley (even in the middle of the day!) and to trust your instinct if someone rubs you the wrong way.

Sounds like a scary moment, Catherine. Glad nothing happened.

Good to hear you got out of it ok.

Yikes, Catherine! Good of you to keep your wits about you and fake the call.
05/02/2007 04:48:56 PM · #1509
Totally scary Catherine - great thinking to fake that call.

Bob, I'm with you as far as literary navel-gazing. It's why I like Isaac Asimov - he's a straight shooter. My response about The Great Gatsby would've been like yours. I enjoyed the book when I read it a few years ago, and it had some interesting social commentary, but months of analysis?

Me, too.....I like someone who tells a story that'll reach out and grab me like a good photographer.....someone who writes so well and rivets me so that I lose track of all else around me.

James Lee Burke comes to mind, Jeffrey Deaver, Stephen King......even though the genre may not necessarily get me, it's the telling of the story....John Grisham, for all his flaws, and Michael Crichton......very much disdained by literary purists, yet a pair of authors I'm always guaranteed to like just because they tell it well.

I read for enjoyment, not political correctness or historical accuracy, so I stay out of the arguments that people get into over some of their work. Having seen Michael Crichton's CV and his tour schedule, I think he's probably amused at the fuss.

Anyway....That's my $0.02 USD for the day!

CAtherine - you are one fearless woman. That is a very scary situation to be in. Thank god you had a phone! I am glad everything worked in your favor. Did you report this to the police so this guy does not sneak up on another unsuspecting soul?

Damn, I left about 2 hours ago to make my grandmother diner. My score was 4.4, I came back to a 4.33! I must have gotten a bunch of 1's while I was gone... :(

my free study is at 4.6 with no comments. it is breaking my heart.

catherine, that was very smart. that guy was definitely trying to get some money. the only variable is how far he was willing to go to get it. Very scary.

Please check this thread. I'm looking for members of the Reaction Club and there's no better pool of prospects than Team Suck:

Is anyone else getting an "invalid user ID" when trying to look at their profile? Or am I slowly being deleted from the site? lol

There were no YAPPIE nominations.

Thanks to quiet_observation for tallying!
