This is admittedly a crazy venture, but it must be granted that the top 10 success here is based on public opinion. Given that the top 10 finishes in each challenge must all be technically sound there must be something that sets them apart from the rest of the field. So, I did a little research, or counting if you will. I looked at several controllable characteristics of the top 10 finished in lots and lots of challenges from this year and tallied results. It must be noted that although content is often driven by the challenge topic, there is enough variation that I think any special influence by challenge topic washes out. Also, my tallies might be a little subjective, but I tried to selective objective criteria.
So, if you want a top 10 finish you might consider incorporating the following – at least as a test for fun:
Main color: small effect, but maybe stay away from the following as the major color influence – pink, orange, purple, white, black – not that these cannot do well, rather those that have done well were not predominantly these colors.
Content: regardless of the topic, try to get a person in your shot somewhere.
Orientation of photo: landscape; period!
Border: no way.
Placement of main subject: really doesn’t matter here – offset or centered do equally well.
Orientation of subject: definitely orthogonal.
Motion: go for static items.
In summary, try: a stationary, up and down or straight across, borderless, pink and orange-less, landscape formatted shot that includes a person. Of course you have to be technically good, but just for fun see how it comes out.

Lol. Borders on both and no people. Maybe he wants all the ribbons for himself. |

Those were obviously dumb luck which cannot be excluded from the equation - just not sure how to factor it.

My profile page shows all of my top 10s together. Most of them are against your theory ;)
I like borders, white, black, and portrait orientation (or square). :D

Not a theory - just an investigation and a computation. None of my top 10 fit the list either. However, what I listed are the significant majority in each category given the number of challenges reviewed. The more challenges added to the tally, the more these could change. For example you know that if you flip a coin a bunch of times, you should get 50% heads and 50% tails. But if you just flip the coin 10 times, you could get something wildly different. I wonder if the same is true here. That is all. Over time and lots of challenges, does a pattern or a predictable nature imerge? If so, can a person use it as a guide for predicting public appeal if they are so interested.

landscape, period? I really don't feel like that makes much of a difference, quality and content rule. |
