I often view and don't vote.
I don't have time (and, often, these days, given the sheer number of entrants) the inclination to vote. Especially since, if I do vote, I prefer to vote on every entry in the challenge.
So I skim through thumbnails, open those I fancy having a look at, sometimes leave a comment, but no vote.

This is a "DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST", as stated on the banner.
So when I vote, I vote like most contest judges would. Along with following the Voting Guidelines
The goal of all Contests, would be to FIND THE BEST ONE(s) out of all entries submitted.
If the requirement is to vote on a Minimum of 20%, I make sure I vote on the TOP-20-PERCENT.
1) I preview all for "thumbnail appeal"
since that is how all judges first see them.
Distinctive, emphasised subjects will usually, stand out.
2) I choose my TOP-20, in comparison to all others submitted.
EDITED: An analogy would be. How many views a pretty girl gets, but not all viewers ask her for a date.

I hear you... But there are 2 problems with this:
1. You are not rating a cross-section of entries and since this is a learning AND a competition site, you are letting many people down who could do with a fair vote and comment. You are actually rating thumbnails then.
2. Since your Avg Vote Cast: 4.6327, your explanation does not quite wash. I would have expected an average 6+ if you are voting on the so-called top shots. The maximum is 10 you know... Or maybe the vote scrubber has got hold of your votes and thrown them out as being universally too high with not enough spread. |

Yes, but she's the one with the gun and the chainsaw. |

Here's my thoughts and this is not directed anywhere in particular.
The idea of having all the thumbs on one page is great for a quick view, but my experience has been that the thumbs can in no way show how good (or bad) some of the photos are. I've clicked on what looks to be great, only to find that the focus is off and there are elements that totally blow the shot. I've also clicked on thumbs of what look to be very boring, only to find that there is something really great about the photo when you see it full view. Something that was not visibly in a thumb.
Everyone can vote as they wish, even if it includes thumbs...but IMHO, voting thumbs isn't fair to the voter (for what you may miss) or to the photographer. For the sake of time, do you voting over a couple of days so you can fairly look at what's there.

1) Yes, I agree, that ones not good enough for the TOP TWENTY PCT, also need comments, so to be fair I should comment on all the rest. Sometimes that can be quite time consuming, which is why I haven't voted very often.
2) I don't think any Scrubber got my votes, and to be fair, it should not. In the begining I just made sure my votes INCLUDED the TOP-20, with deserving scores. The rest I may have picked more randomly, 99% of the time I was able to get the top 3-5 out of my TOP-20 Picks.
I wouldn't mind joining the Critique Club in helping out those that request a critique, that is one way for the newer group to learn.
Yes, voting in itself, has been a GREAT LEARNING experiance for me. At least I see, that I know what is good compared to all. Getting the ideas, techniques, equipment, logistics, editing, ON-TIME is the real challenge.

I TOTALLY agree, the same goes on in the back of my cameras LCD, when I zoom-in. I've had the same experiences.
but I've had to make my thumbnails look good, too.
1) Most voters see them first
2) This is a website .jpg, not a 16 x 20, or larger gallery of prints
(processing adjustments differ)

I'm missing something here in your line of reasoning on the importance of thumbnails and voting.
How is it that "most voters see them first"? The thumbnails come up when you first go into the challenge to vote, but once you start voting the images automatically load for you.
It takes a conscious, determined effort to actually use the thumbnails for voting - which personally I don't think many voters use in that manner. |

They locked the pillow fight... we're not allowed to do it any more :(
Oops, I'm wrong, they didn't lock, I believe we chose to move it to the bar instead :) (bad memory!)

When has voting ever been fair to the entrants? ;D
