How about having a couple of more response checkboxes for the photographer to respond other than just "Helpful" eg: "Thanks" and ":P"

Also can we have special bbCode for the comments for automatic linking to DPC username profiles eg: [dpcUser]tarique[/dpcUser] will create a link to user tarique's profile

If we have this, I suggestion:

1. Nice comment, good job.
2. Good job, nice comment.
3. Good comment, nice job.
4. Nice job, good comment.

We could even add ones for tough people:

1. WTF were you thinking.
2. No. Just no.
3. Are you looking at MY photo?

Or the timid shy people:
1. Please...um what uh...could you explain maybe explain that in another uh...way?
2. Um, sure..I'll go do that...thanks for the suggestion!
3. Uh..are you sure...cuz um... maybe yeah maybe I intended it that way but I'm not really sure....um..but if you think so...

I would love a "thanks". Actually, in place of "helpful" even. I am always thankful for helpful comments. I also get a lot that I appreciate, but they weren't helpful. They were just nice.

I'm hanging out for:

I don't give a flying one if this doesn't meet your narrow interpretation of the challenge.

-and-

On which planet exactly does a sheep not count as country life?

Um, okay, the second one may not be very useful most of the time, but it wouldn't hurt to add it anyway ; )

i think adding 'thanks' to the 'helpful' we already have would be cool. if you don't like what they say, you just don't click anything. and if you really don't like what they say, you can PM them and say "On which planet exactly does a sheep not count as country life? "

Getting any comments would be nice. I've only got 1 for my Round photo, with 107 votes! :-(

Of course, if you get a comment from me, you would want a check that says:

*Huh? Sounds profound, but.... what does 'hegemony' mean?"

That would be every known planet except Earth ... I wasn't aware that DPC had a policy of discrimination based on planet of origin.

I do think "Helpful" and "Thanks (for the compliment)" might be good choices ....

My apologies to all extra-terrestrials on the site. If any of you have a spare seat on an outbound trip be sure to let me know!

As for the 'thanks' tick, you could always use the PM suggestion for that too - I got called 'class' for doing that once : )

Well, yes, the problem would be solved if there was a link to PM the commenter right there. I've been suggesting that since about June of 2002 ... I think the current system is designed to maximize Profile page hits ....

I'm sorry but, you all have seemed to have missed the important category of responding in a positive manner to comments such as "????"! I think this would fall into the "what does ???? mean?" cateorgy!

OK I posted this

a while ago and no one seemed interested

this was my original post:

I'm new here and maybe I missed a poll or discussion about this earlier but I think it would be really helpful to me to have other options besides checking "This comment was helpful"
let me explain being a beginner myself I don't feel qualified to comment technically on photos unless I see a problem I've tackled and conquered myself so I often times I make a comment in the congratulatory way and not ment as anything more useful than applause. I don't expect this to be helpful to anyone but I was moved by the craftsmanship and artistry to say something. I'd like to know the photog got my comment, but to say it's helpful to anything other than the ego would be an era. Also a few comments addressed to me were I felt so off the mark that they missed entirely the whole point of what I was saying with my pic. To call them helpful would be wrong since I so strongly disagree. I think to give more options would encourage the kind of helpful criticism designed to make your photographs better and still agknowlage comments that don't quite help but are nice to receive like applause

Here's what I suggest

1 This comment was helpful

2 thank you for your interest

3 I disagree

OK guys ....discuss

It may be timing. Not to many are awake at 3AM or 1AM.
Some days when I work I am up all night but when I'm off I'm asleep on my off days.
