anyone have any suggestions for a used ultra portable laptop (12 inch screen size) for about $500.
Battery life if perhaps one of the most important things. I would want to use it for watching movies while flying, downloading images while out on a trip and perhaps a little email and web surfing so the specs don't have to be too fancy - just a good battery. |

| You say you only want it to watch movies, download images and email. A computer that does these three basic requirements is not going to be cheap. My computer which has these abilities and I used only for bookkeeping, emails, DPC (naturally) and photoshop cost me $2500aud. and I bought it specifically to do these few things well. |

i am not sure i understand monique64.
It doesn't take much of a processor to go on the net or watch a movie. An apple ibook with a 12inch screen and 1.33ghz will last about 4hours of movie watching and goes for about US $600 used.
that is what i am looking at so far but am interested in any other ideas.

Heh the minimum requirement for a computer to watch DVD's is about a 400mhz celeron which is a very old and weak processor. EMail and Downloading. Hell i cant think of a pc made in the last 8 years that cant easily handle mass amounts of downloads.
Photoshop is a different story but still you can buy a brand new laptop for 500 dollars that can handle it just fine.
That said I have a 2 year old desktop, 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 HT, 500 GB Western Digital Hard drive, 2GB of Dual Channel Corsair DDR ram. Radeon X1300 512mb video card factory overclocked.
Anyways onto my point
Im not sure what kind of 500 dollars were talking here if its US dollars then check this out.
1 - a 12 inch laptop typically costs more then a 14 inch laptop.... dont ask its not about screen size its about chassis size.
A 14 inch laptop will be 200 to 300 dollars cheaper as far as NEW one go.Used, some of the older models you can find with a 12 inch are usualier heavier then their newer 14 inch counterparts.
For 570 dollars NEW
Acer Aspire 3680 2249 Notebook
Intel Celeron M 420 1.60GHz
802.11b/g Wireless
512MB DDR2
80GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD
14.1" WXGA
If you lived in the US u could get this for 500 dollars flat right now.
You can find refurbed laptops for 400-500 dollars. I dont recommend these because batterys on laptops dont last fro crap and cost 90-150 dollars. ALso the older processors are not as energy efficient, such as the Pentium M, Celeron M, AMD Turion.

that one does look allright except the only comment on battery life I found put it at 1-2 hours :( not good
One reason I am looking at the 12" monitor is because it extends battery life. I have had a laptop before but the battery lasted under 1hour... not very usefull if you are going to try watch a movie on the airplane.
The apple is said to last 4.4 hours (according to cnet) |

the things you want to do on it is pretty basic - something that requires only a relatively slow processor and small amount of ram. try searching for moderately old laptops and then purchase a new battery for it separately. the batteries usually lasts about 1 years anyway before they stop holding charge, so its pointless to limit yourself with the "bundled" battery condition when buying used laptops.
alternatively:
i) ever heard of airplane chargers? if you already have a laptop, just get one of those and you can watch movies on the plane for hours without worries :P
ii) get a handheld device instead - they do movies, surfing, email as well as laptops. no 12 inch screens, but some have very good screens.

Crayon, I could be wrong some things assumed. But most portables dont have the hd space to dump memory cards. And im also assuming leaf wants todo ont he spot processing in some cases or just when out and about. Of course there are walls but not always.
Leaf check out averatec. They used to make multimedia models that get 3 hours and are pretty light and compact and not too expensive. They always had refurbs on hand just stay away from their tablets okay!
Also you could (additional money of course) invest in an external battery that plugs into the power port. SOme models fir right to the bottom of the laptop.
Just a thought incase u run into an awesome model with sucky life.

I believe you are looking for something like this. It is called the A5. I have one and it's very sweet. Less than 2kg, as well.

Been away for a while. You may need to convert from AUD. I also have a 100gig hard drive (which was a must for me),wirless modem, and DVD burner etc, and this was also new. What I meant was that I didn't specifically purchase for games and huge internet downloads etc. My old dell is only 40 gig and runs soooo slow when working with Photoshop. It started to drive me nuts. However its basically a great laptop and at 3 years old you can buy it for about $500.00 aud. But I didn't find it suitable anymore.
