As some of you know, I've recently had the second surgery to try to correct a fissure that is likely caused by Crohn's disease. I've been doing a bit of research and found some information that probiotics (Lactic Acid Bacteria) may help treat Crohn's and other IBDs.

Researchers are unsure what causes the effects seen in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Although some investigations have revealed that lactic acid bacteria such as Bifidobacteria sp . are particularly low in Chrohn's Disease patients, [124] it has been suggested that rather than just a disruption to the normal microbes of the gut, this normal gut âfloraâ may actually cause an aggressive immunological response in IBD patients. Therefore it has been proposed that perhaps colonizing the gut with bacteria capable of favourably modulating this immunological response may be an effective strategy for preventing relapses in IBD patients. Now one thing I like about DPC is that it is such a varied community that no matter the question, I know someone has done the research.

I know that some yogurts are good sources of probiotics. Which brands are the best?

Supplements? Whcih brands? Which bacteria and strains should I be looking for? What brands are the best?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advanced. And please know that I may be a bit slow in responses.

I dont know if you will be able to find this where you live but there is a yogurt called FAGE which is very good.
It comes from greece, and i grew up on the stuff, but recently with probiotics being something many people in the world seek, the company exports everywhere
Its a strained yogurt, and besides being probiotic, is extremely tasty.

When i was in the states i had seen it at a dean+delucca store.

Im sure there are others just as good, but tastewise for me this is the best. (you can make a wicked tzatziki with it too)

Can't remember the brand...but can tell you this, there is not enough acidophilus in yogurt to have the effects you want...eat the yogurt (such as Astro Pro-biotics) but take a supplement daily...and keep the acidophilus in the fridge.

I think for more specific advice I would recommend finding a trustworthy naturopath in your area.

I personally like the DanActive drinks, and they were rated highly for "enough" acidophilus in Consumer Reports. - edit to note the Consumer Reports article was informative and might answer some of your questions, and think it was from an issue in 2006.

My how time flies, the CR article is actually from July 2005. You may be able to get a hold of it at a library. CR website only allows subscriber login to see the article.

Leroy-

There is a book you need to read. I've adapted some of these techniques to cure some of my issues.

Patient, Heal Thyself

It deals in pro-biotics, lactobacillus, acidopholus and dietary changes that you may need to make in order to heal.

Also- I eat Activia Light Yogurt every day. This is helping me achieve much better bowel health than before I started eating it.

Leroy,
My hubby's uncle has Crohn's and has had good success in helping control his bowel since he added Biobeads to his routine. See Vitacost for ordering and product info.
We also use these with the children, and they seem to cut down on allergic reaction severity with their food allergies.

Another thing which is a little more on the, um, unusual side is earthworms. See article (scroll down for article). This is a little 'out of the box', but seems legit. I'm sure you'll be able to find more info.

Good luck!

I used something last July when I was sick, don't remember the name. They were basically something kinda like a yogurt shot, but really high numbers of live cultures. I'll look up the brand when I get home.

Activia yogurt is also helpful, for something a little more widely available. Fiber and live cultures, good with fruit and granola.

My Mom has had many bowel surgeries, she has had feeding tubes, G tubes, J tubes, an ostomy, etc.. I was on the phone with her while reading your thread and she mentioned this product, hope the info helps.

BioK+

The nice bit is that they have a dairy-free version, just in case a big part of the intestinal ickage is lactose intolerance - which with irritable bowel syndrome and related disorders can be a problem all its own.

I can find it at natural foods stores like Whole Foods or Wild Oats.

Here is the yogurt that was recommended to us when my daughter was younger and had a bad winter of the stomach flu. It really helps:

Stonyfield Yogurt
