I was recently in Washington State & Oregon and saw more hybrid cars than I've seen in Europe. It was good to see. Yes there's quite a few Hummers and trucks as well but then again, in Europe there are more large Mercedes, BMW's and Range Rovers which are not exactly the most fuel efficient cars either. And like someone pointed out... It's generally the people that can't afford those big luxury cars that complain about the gas prices. Hummer or Range Rover owners generally don't have to worry about it too much.

And for the record. Here in Iceland the price is about $1.84 per Litre, which is close to $7 per gallon. :)

It was reported that of all the US cities that have "signed on" with the Kyoto accord, only Portland, OR has actually lowered its carbon emissions.

I do see quite a few hybrids around here. I also appreciate the investment in cheap/free light rail. That's where you will make a big difference in a city. Screw the billions on more lanes, spend that on light rail.

look that if you have an hybrid car often you can't enter in many garage in Italy, this is the reason because i have only the benzine traction.

Please tell me you really did say that DrAchoo, that's quite the funniest line I've heard on the subject!

Oh, and I bought my Prius back when you could still dicker on the price. Heh, heh. Still, I'm not laughing, really, except at that funny line. I paid USD$3.50 for my 7 US gallons of gas yesterday.

Engines are a LOT more efficient - the makers just chose HP over economy.

Actually the two go hand in hand. What we need are lighter cars with less wind resistance. Carbon fibre construction would be nice.
And instead of an engine that makes 400hp one that does 80 hp would do just fine in a 800 pound car. In the early 80's I saw a kit for converting a motorcyle to a teardrop shaped super mileage auto.
A friend converted his 650 Yamaha. As a bike it got 60 mpg. Converted to the car with the streamlined body it got 120 mpg. It was dangerous as hell on the road and still a one person vehicle. I'd think with todays tech we'd be able to do something close to this and make it a 4 passenger that was fairly safe.

bout $3 a gallon. And a litre is definately bigger than a quart (by about 50ml iirc) and 4 quarts = 1 gallon.

If we want to really affect emissions, put catalytic converters on lawn mowers. Using a gas lawn mower for 1 hr causes the same emissions as a car on a 650 mile trip. (That of course depends on the car but you get the picture) - this is a stat from a few years back but probably still applies with the improvements to both lawn mowers and cars.

I think lawn mowers should be outlawed. Every one should buy a goat!

Just think of all the noise pollution that would be eliminated.
... and the flowers, and the bushes, and the garbage .....

If everyone says what kind of gallons they use it would make life a lot easier. My calculations earlier, as already mentioned, were in US Gallons and I think most if not all US members here are pumping US gallons into their car? Altough they probably wish they were CDN gallons by now.

I saw about $1.08/L here this morning - I'm a little east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Other things mentioned :

- Renting a 3-bedroom apartment : $1100/month (approx. $1.46/sq ft per month).

The, ermmm, shit that comes out of the goat is not exactly environmently friendly either. Lots of methane, ammonia, CO2 and stuff like that. Also a lot of fun when your kids get back from playing in the garden, you thought you had them put on a fresh white shirt just 30 minutes ago....

And a goat makes a lot of noise too, he doesn't stop after an hour either. Just goes on in the night too, people's stress level rises and you'll see that more people die from goat stress than the pollution by fossil fuels.

Not any more!!!

House prices are insane in the UK at the moment, although London is just going stupid. I live in Essex, our house, when we purchased it ~ 10 years ago cost £50k, now its worth £170k (about $340,000 USD). Mad.

Look:

Housing in Maryland id mid priced. Condo's cost to buy is 90-250,000 dollars. Town Homes go for 400,000+, Full Family Homes go for 250,000 to 700,000 dollars. Rundown duplex's and row homes go for 120-250,000 dollars.

With petrol at around $1 per gallon, it makes commuting almost feasible. The only issue would be the time zones - easy to get back to the UK, but a bit of a bummer on the return trip.

final answer: reel mower (or just pave the yard and paint it green)

Woo hoo! That's how I mow my lawn. I love it. Quiet. Cuts well. Don't have to worry about my kids getting their foot chopped off. No gas. No upkeep. No worries.

Youll rarley see a Civic, Accord, Escape things of that sort and be like Hey thats the hybrid model. Dont forget that mainstream cars are going to be more popular as hybrids for those who can afford them. Who wants a prius when u can get a slightly less efficient Camry Hybrid(not sure if its out yet).
