totally sad. But it raises a good question about elderly drivers. It may just be this guy wasn't capable of driving. Lord knows I see blue haired grandmas on the road that are driving 40 mph on the freeway all the time.

yeah.. my friend was in a building right next to it.. was sort of concerned when he saw 4 helicopers over his office... then looked down the window to see that...

About elderly drivers.. so true.. I swerve (to avoid collision) more from elderly not looking where they're driving than from anyone else these days..

I know I can be distracted sometimes when driving.. but I constantly see elderly driving across 4 lanes of traffic without even turning to look if there's incoming traffic. It's almost like a "they'll see me and stop" attitude.. but really, I dont know what they're thinking.. could just be that they forget to look? I'd love to know what goes through their mind sometimes..

just to add.. my 89 year old grandpa actually passed the driving test, but the rest of the family would have been terrified to be in a car with him. He's so distracted sometimes i bet he'd forget where he was going.. in any case.. my grandparents dont have a car anymore (thank god) and they live only 5 mins from my house.. we drive them where they need to go, and if we cant, they take a taxi (small town anyway..).. i'm much happier that it's this way for us..

I had an accident in 1989 with an 86 old driver and lucky for us out of 7 people no one got seriously hurt!He turn left on green light on front of incoming traffic and my car was closest!

Yes, it is sad this elderly driving thing.

My Dad was very old but died peacefully in his sleep, not kicking and screaming like the passengers in his car! ;)

I think that elderly people should get a driving test every year. But I think younger people should also be tested more often. Once in every 5 years? And every time you get a fine(like in China). This accident shows how dangerous cars can be.

yeah.. more diving tests all-around cant be a bad thing.. but the rate really needs to be upped for the elderly, and once a year sounds reasonable. Now this sounds like alot for someone who's fine, but people can "lose" their sense orientation quickly at high ages. My grandfather within a 1 year period has degraded alot, and yet still passed the test (that i dont understand, needs to be more extensive obviously) because no one would have dared to ride with him. I *think* they just tested his eyesight though.. there are no requred actual *driving* test at any age, yet there definatly should be, young and old.

Traffic changes, I live in Holland and every year we get more roads, more rules and more traffic-jams. So a lot of people who are less confident of their driving will not drive during rush-hours, or they only drive in the weekends. Those people are dangerous.

I read in another article that he stated, "the people were in his way" so I'm left to wonder how much of an accident it was. Senility can be a scary thing; my own grandmother is suffering from an early form of Alzheimer’s and is being very hateful to the people that love her most.

In texas once you get to 65 you can just send in your renewal by mail so you DONT have to go down to the Drivers Licens office (DMV for the rest of you).

Also in Texas you can have your parrents teach you how to drive and then take a short written test and a very short driving test with a DPS officer.

when I turned 16 many years ago, my driving test took all of 15 minutes.

3 right turns, 3 left turns, 1 left turn from a stop light and a 3 point turn around and that was all....

Yes I do feel more drivers training is needed and more frequent re-test.

I would also like to see a automobile handling course taught by auto insurance companies to teach people how to control their car (like an AutoX course). I would want it to be mandatory every 3 years, plus it would be nice if the insurance company gave you a discount on your insurance :) once you pass the course.

I learned so much from doing just a few AuotX's.

I don't think someone who is driving for 40-50-60 years need driving test, but physical-mental-visual exam ,like they do it in Europe!

actually, i especially think people who have been driving for 50 years should be tested. They learned on MUCH different cars than now, and might actually be confused by all the "gizmos" on the newer cars. Youd *can* be a bad driver for 40 years until someone actually tests you :)

If you stand close to someone in trouble you will get hurt, this is not only the case with senility but with a lot of diseases. The people who love this person the most are the first to deal with the frustrations or anger. That's what friends are for.
