1. There's a difference between "new camera IN the box" and "new camera box". People have bought what they thought were computers, cameras, etc only to find that the ad was for the box only.

2. Watch the shipping cost. I bought a set of glowsticks for 1 cent, with a $25 shipping charge. It was still cheaper than the other vendors, but it seems some vendors bundle the price and shipping into the "shipping cost".

3. if its a large seller, check www.resellerratings.com IIRC, they have some of the larger ebay sellers listed.

4. some legitimate camera stores seem to have an ebay storefront.

Ebay vendors are no worse than many other online stores. There is some fraud on ebay, but there are a lot of shady online camera stores.

The Canon Outlet on ebay is fantastic for all you dark side types, I wish Nikon had one.

I went to the largest camera store in my city, and tried out about 5 different semi-fish eye attachments for my old P&S. None of them worked well, and some were quite expensive models. Got onto ebay, found a reasonably cheap model and decided to go for it. The result worked far better than any of the in-store options, at a decent price.

Even still, I was a little unhappy about the way the vignetting circle worked (a peculiarity of how my camera zoomed). The seller was more than willing to refund or exchange it, but after some consideration, I decided that since it was better than anything else I'd seen, I'd live with it's minor limitation and I kept it. Since then, I've been pretty happy with it. It also fits my DSLR now, and on the DSLR, it doesn't have the same vignetting problem.
