are you bored and waiting for rollover? are you a photoshop guru who's ready to help me with a kind of stupid request? then have i got a job for you.

help! it's nancy drew and the case of the luminescent helicon!

i shot some photos of a band last weekend and the band came up with the concept for one of the shots. the idea is to do a "manger" scene (ala the birth of jesus) but using a helicon tuba (it's like a french horn tuba thingy) as the baby. they want the baby to "glow" (in the form of light rays and actual glowing) and the word they keep using is "luminescent."

i have decided to swallow my pride and upload some rough, unretouched images for you to review. if anyone wants to play, please do. i also have the NEF files uploaded and available for download if you want to go really crazy. just send me a PM.

i lit the shot two ways -- one has a direct flash aimed at the tuba for some luminescence, and one without that flash going off.

yes, i know you can see the flash in the shot. I KNOW THE IMAGES I'M UPLOADING HAVE PROBLEMS! i haven't done a lick of editing on these. so please just focus only on the helicon. and remember your steps so i can try to work with your tips in mind. :)

c'mon...who's got game?

Something like this?

these are all on the right track -- thanks!

i need to do it in such a way that it's the focal point but not the focus of the image -- does that make sense? all of the band's faces should still be clearly defined. the helicon isn't the ONLY light source in the photo, but it's definitely prominent.

you guys are great for helping out.

heres my crack at it, not much different
just used lens flare, then faded it out a little.

I also added glowing edges, first. (edit)

My laptop with CS on it is under the blue screen of death so this is my rusty shot with the elements tool set, i cloned out the light on the celing and used a gradient map to darken up the edges one multiply layer , and a bit of dodge and burn.

Here's my crack (pun intended)

And this is essentially the same one but with an added element I thought it needed...

Fun stuff. :)

hey everyone!

i kind of dropped the ball on this, but i really appreciate everyone's help.

i found another shot in the series that i liked better (for a couple of reasons), so here's kind of where i ended up with the photo:

i wanted the soft glowy effect, so it's purposely not very sharpened. i also did a partially desaturated version just for fun:

the client sees them tomorrow. i hope they like them! :)

ps -- here's one more that i just had to upload because i love it so much. :)

needless to say, these guys are insane.
