sorry might not be much help cause all I can say is WOW. very nice. I thought the subtle colors of others I've seen was cool but these nice bright colors are awesome. well done.

The smoke looks very good. Not sure about the intense color but you manage to avoid banding given the high saturation.

thanks for your comments, appreciate it.
I have seen quiet a few smoke shots with subtle colors, here I was trying to use some catchy colors to get a different effect. I do think that the saturation is a bit more and I need to mix them well..

Those are really cool! Can you describe how you got that effect?

I shot a regular smoke shot ( smoke over black background) and then converted it to b/w. Then add a color balance layer and change the color. this only affects the smoke as the black (000) will not get any color. Use one color balance layer for each color you want to add. Now mask out the layers where you don't want them. you may use exclusive color or have two over each other and blend

I'm interesed in what set up you used to take these shots, backdrops, lighting, etc?

Ben,
the lighting setup is similar to what is described in this tutorial

I was using a AB 400W source with a softbox. Shot with 100mm macro lens at 1/250s and F9 to freeze the smoke. I wanted to shoot at higher speed 1/400s or so, but Xsync for 30D is limited to 1/250s. backdrop was dark gray paper, but will little light falling on it, it becomes close to black which is further darkened using levels.
