Went out this morning with the aim of praticing technique for capturing birds in flight but ended up taking more photographs of them sitting on their bum! Oh well, it was kinda fun anyway.
I know seagulls are not the most interesting of creatures but wondered if anyone had any comments/suggestions/critique?
Thanks

I really love number (not 4) meant 3 as I think it really show the character of a seagull, naughty and noisy. He looks like he has a lot to say.
Edit wrong photo number

erm ... what am I missing? ... Number 4 doesn't look like he has anything to say at all ... Number 3 seems to be doing all the yapping ???

oh yeah, good job greetmir is on the ball I completely missed that one!
Have been having a go at post processing this one
before after
Have i overcooked it or does it look better? All i've done is adjusted the shadow and highlight levels slightly to bring out the detail. When working on this one I noticed a few bright spots around the bird, does anyone know what this might be? Does it just look light sun reflection? I wasn't using the hood on my lens so i'm wondering if some unwanted light has managed to get through?

Shots are OK, like you said, not hugely intersting, but technically 2 of them are pretty good.
Gulls do have their moments when they can look interesting!!

yup, now that's the type of shot I have been practicing to try and get, how long did you have to sit there for before getting the chance to take that shot?

Forgot to ask, which 2 out of the 4 do you think are technically very good? |

It was an opportunistic shot, a moorhen at a local lake had a bit of bread in its mouth and was being divebombed by the gull, I just tracked him using AFServo and as soon as he hit the water I fired off a load of shots, I was just lucky with the splashes, the focus and especially the light.
The technically adept photos are numbers 1 & 4, due to rule of thirds being implemented, good exposure, sharp focusing.. all 3 just come togehter well in those 2 images IMHO. |

Hmmm. Came back for another peek and I'm kind of liking this one ==>
in addition to the one mentioned previously ==>
I had a chance to grab some seagull shots on a trip to Michigan recently. :)

hey they are really cool, I especially like the blue angel formation one :o)
The next challenge I have set myself is to capture them in mid flight, something I tried to do the last time but failed miserably.
I know seagulls are not really that interesting but they do make good practice material for action shots!

Seagulls. I like to shoot them too. One windy afternoon, I positioned myself, the Bigma and a tripod on a cliff and just snapped gulls as they passed by all afternoon long. Each took the same line, and all assumed the same position as they passed through. Here's one result (It's a composite of 7 shots):
