Hi,
just sold my Nikon F100 for 270 quid and so very tempted to invest in a new digital camera. I have got a Nikon coolpix 5700 at the mo-had this for about 6 years and it's still going strong but want a new toy to play with!
I am tempted by a Nikon D40X but have also just come across the Olympus SP-550 UZ....I am off to India for the summer and then moving to Jordan, so the ability to take pictures without being noticed would be a big advantage (especially in Jordan where people don't like having their pictures taken!) Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks..

Even the D40x is small its not quite the thing for not being noticed. It is a great camera for sure but you will have to get AFs lenses with it as it has no internal focusing built into the camera. There are some great mini cameras around that are the size of credit cards and pack a mean punch. My all time favorite was the Contax U4R incredible pics from a REAL Carl Zeiss lens system but I think you would want something a bit more pro standard if you are going to be in India, dont wanna miss the shots, and you already have a rather nice P&S with the 5700 (used to have one for a while) you may want to consider its big brother the 8800VR I have heard excellent things about it, similar in size though and might be out of your current budget, the D40x is also out of your current budget so i am assuming you have a little extra floating around.
It is always better to ask people for a pic even if they say no, its always better to at least ask.
You may want to consider getting a D50 kit with the 18-55 & 55-200 set, I think they are around 500 quid but the D50 (unlike the D40x) can use any nikon lens and to be honest, the image quality is no different.
You may want to consider buying used. You can get some great deals, we have a very nice used camera place in town called Digital Depot they have some amazing deals especially on P&S.
Hope it was helpfull to you. |

MAK - good points and I agree about the D50 over the D40 - many more options and flexibility. I must say that I went looking for a D50 for my son's school and was unable to find them at B&H, 17th Street and others. Not sure what is going on - are they just out of stock or do they not carry anymore?
We ended up going with the Canon 350D XT instead because it was very comparable and the price was right.

Good advice-thanks.
I would normally ask if I can take a picture, but sometimes if you are far away from them and just want candid shots...
Do you know if you can use sigma lenses with the Nikon D40X?

Sigma have HSM lenses they have internal focus drives you could use them. There is a D50 at our local store here right now for 250 quid without a lens. It is a refurb one from a reputable dealer I live in Herts, bit far from you I know. the D50 will accept ANY sigma, Tamron, Tokina Nikon lenses whereas the D40x will only accept the AFs nikon or the HSM sigma. Im not sure Tamron or Tokina even make internal focus drive lenses.
For shooting far away candids you may as well go for the twin lens kit 18-55 / 55-200 with a D50 body (or a D40x if you have the extra quids) Getting a refurb D50 and a nice smile for some discount on the 18-55 / 55-200 kit lenses would be best IMHO. If you have the extra cash and do not wish to use standard lenses without AFs or HSM then go with the D40x kit.
Thanks for the comment on my daughters photo, your Japanese is pretty good.

Thanks for all the good advice..
I already have 2 sigmas lenses a 28-80mm and 70-300mm- these were bought in a package with a Nikon F70 years ago-don't know if they are HSM??!!. Looks like these should work with a D50 but not a D40X....(seriously can't afford a D40X anyway!)
By the way MAK I lived in Japan for 6 years-I miss the old crazy place!

Pentax K10/100D + DA 21, 40 and 70 Limited pancake lenses.
It doesnt get more compact than this.
Edit: sorry, didnt see your last post. If you cant afford the D40x, this kit is above your price range.

My first thought on almost all of these posts is did you guys see how much money she sold the F100 for.... not alot to turn around on. When i saw your name I knew it was gonna be a K10D package suggestion.
