I have recently purchased a Canon A540 and
I'm pretty happy with it. I looked at reviews at
Cnet.com, Amazon.com, DCResource.com, and steve-digicams.com
before making the purchase.
Reviews for this model have generally been quite favorable.

I would like to hear from other DPC members who
own a point and shoot camera, (can be any point and shoot model)
as I'm interested in reading about their own experiences
with it good and bad.

Love my little Sony T-9. I don't think these P&S get a lot of respect, but it is a great pocket camera that produces very nice pictures. I love my DSLR, but I can't take it with me everywhere.

Whatcha wanna know?

I love my two P&S (Canon Powershot S2 IS and A620) because:
- they both have flip-out LCDs that let me see what I'm doing without contorting myself into off-kilter positions (e.g., I can shoot at my kids' eye-height without bending down); for my S2 IS, the "viewfinder" is just a miniature LCD anyway, so I don't lose anything by using it
- they take great video of my kids; I need only one device, not two, for family events
- they're lightweight, so I'm willing to bring them along just in case I see something worth shooting (esp. the A620)
- the S2 IS has a great lens that goes from 0mm (yes, I can shoot something touching the front of the lens) to 400mm equivalent
- they take nice, sharp shots even without a lot of processing

I still use my six year old Olympus D490z all the time, especially when driving around.

All of my top three challlenge entries were taken with it.

Main limitations are only 3x zoom, 2MP size, and shutter-lag, though the latter is a problem with every camera I've had.

My Canon S3 IS is technically a P&S camera, but it mostly functions more like a dSLR.

I like my p&s cameras for a few reasons........
-they are convenient to carry (not alot of luggage)
-they are lightweight & I have a problem (neuropathy) where my hand cramp & I cannot hold heavier cameras for as long. So the p&s are great especially if I'm going to be holding & shooting for hours.(esp. with genealogy, I take alot of gravestone pics)
-they are user friendly (at least the ones I have are)

Thanks for the feedback guys.

As a footnote, while I don't have a DSLR, I do have an SLR.
It's a Canon Rebel Ti. I bought a couple of Zoom lenses for it,
neither the most expensive kind.

It takes good pictures, but I just didn't want to lug around
anything heavy (if zoom lens included) with me. It kind of took
away some of the spontaneity of photography for me, so I switched
to digital. Eventually I'll buy a DSLR, Canon most being likely.

But for most days, it will always be my Canon A540.

I've had pretty good luck with my Canon Elph S200. We have had it for 4-5 years and it always takes some nice picture outside with good lighting - inside is another story all together! I use my DSLR for every day use - but I still have my S200 in my pocket for 'candid' shots
.
Here are some examples:

I have a Canon S2 IS which is better than an SLR. With the zoom I can get more magnification than an SLR and don't need to lug around alot of lenses.

I put a piece of exposed slide film over the popup flash and use an external flash when needed for flash shots.

High ISO pictures need noise reduction but with today's programs this is an easy post-processing job.

My p&s is definitely good enough for anything... It's compact and ready to go when you want it..
The cons are the noise[horrid!] and the misleading lcd [It lets you believe you have a sharp picture when you haven't]...

Highest scoring of my camera.. not that I have much competition.. I'm the only active user of this camera..lol!

The pic that drove me mad.. red noisy spots that I had to go over by hand

Just wanted to know if anyone else finds their viewfinder and lcd not matching.. If I only use the viewfinder chances are I'll lose a bit of the scene...

Point and shooters of the world unite!

I love my little camera, it has an adequate zoom level, images are quite sharp, and it has the capabilities of shooting in raw. The negatives would be when it comes to shooting images that require a shallow DOF, that can be quite the struggle. Also, Wide angle is basically non existent.

My FZ-20 is awesome. The zoom is amazing, and I have macro filters for it too, so I am happy. Noise is ok, and I have Neat Image for that.

I want to upgrade to a Canon dSLR, but I just bought a laptop..

Well I was bought my Canon S3 IS for my birthday (february), which is the first decent camera I have ever been lucky enough to own. I have to say opening the box and finding it made me as happy and excited as a 14year old let alone a 44 year old.

I still feel I am learning lots about it, and I cant deny that I occasionally look with a touch of envy at some of the dSLR's that other people own, but for an amateur it gives me everything that I need and, although I dont think that a great camera necessarily makes for a great photographer, I have to say I think it has improved my output (together with some great help and advice from a number of people on this site)

I have a compact kodak p&s. My 6yo daughter uses it now and it doesn't do too shabby- there are a few pictures in my portfolio that she has done with it. I like it because it also takes short snippits of video and it's small, I can throw it in my purse or backpack pocket.
