I was reviewing my entries after 2 dozen challenges on DPC and made a startling and insanely if not stupid observation. By far, my best rated images have been those that I took the time to use a tripod. I always thought I had a pretty 'steady' hand use pretty fast shutter spees, but it is amazing what a three legged metal device can do for clarity and shot selection.... 7 or my top 10 rated image and all three above 6.5 used a tripod
Beyond clarity - I also think that they have a tendency to force you to make better set ups for shots.
Anyone else notice this same silly little obersevation with their entries?

Makes sense. All of what you said.

Nope. Of my top 10 shots, only two were taken using a tripod:
(oops, that was supposed to be a table shot, wasn't it? LOL, Oh well, it looked like a table shot)
30 second exposure
I rarely use a tripod.

Tripod? I dont even own one anymore. I use a monopod every now and then. But mostly I gave my tripod away because it took up too much space.

Indeed. I had shoulder surgery about a year ago, and had to use a tripod for everything for several months. I was so impressed with how much my photography improved that I never really went back to shooting handheld.
Nowadays I have a good monopod, and I tend to use that for things that I would have shot handheld before. |

Opps I quoted the wrong post. Meant to quote KarenNFLD
I find it hard to believe that you didn't use a tripod for the 30 second shot and it was still so clear. Did you use anything to hold you camera or had steady like the car roof or a fence etc.

Try using a tripod for candids ;) |

I will - good idea! I guess one way to use them is have a whole bunch of cameras set up and hit remotes every once in a while in hopes that you get something worthwhile...off to B&H to buy some new cameras and tripods to give it a go...

I suspect you're being sarcastic, but actually it's quite easy. You set it up, set the timer, and walk away, and no one ever knows it's shooting. Did that just yesterday, actually, pulling together my shots for my triptych entry.

Love my monopod. My nephew named it "Picture Stick" . It takes my camera where I can't reach, and it's great for panning shots too.

Interesting.... 7 out of my top 10 were tripod mounted. Mainly used by necessity for longer exposure times. I find a tripod cumbersome when dealing with people but really relaxing when shooting landscape. It makes me take extra time in composing the shot.

Huh, only 3 out of 10 were tripod shots. My highest rated one was taken from a car going 60mph.
I think it all has to do with the available light. If it's a bright sunny day and you can flip your camera uspside-down and snap a pic at the same time without it being shakey, then fantastic! Howvever in low lighting or indoors, I usually prefer to use one and put it on 2 sec timer on my tripod.

Sorry a bit early and was also distracted by someone. Thanks for the clarification.

4 with tripod out of top 20 :)
(but I'm very lazy)
Actually, I think a lot of it is personal preference. Tripods do work, very well. Not everybody likes that style though.

I always use a tripod unless there is a good reason not to. I also always use mirror lockup and the timer when using the tripod...

lol. I was being sarcastic. Point is, it's more about knowing *when* to use something than it is about something being always useful :) |

13 out of my top 20 for me were taken on a tripod. 3 were SP's the other, one was going to be an SP but turned into a candid(see earlier post :)) and the rest were exposures longer than I could shoot handheld. |

I agree with your comment about using something at the right time - but I see a lot of pictures on this site - especially portraits or landscapes that are fuzzy or soft of focus - and most often it is due to poor camera technique that could be remedied by a tripod. Just my two cents...

Oh, I didn't really mean to underscore the original sentiment of the thread... was just ribbin' on you a bit.
Still.. I personally think that a lot of these portraits and landscapes that are fuzzy and out of focus (especially due to camera shake), are more a product of the current site atmosphere.. which is that of people saying *anything* is wonderful in comments, and people aren't getting the true help, on an individual level, that they could really use.
But that's just *me* :)
