I'm going to be driving from Los Angeles to Louisiana in about a week. I'll be taking the 10 freeway to the 20 freeway into Louisiana.

So I was wondering if you guys could recommend some place for me to stop and take some pictures. I don't want to go too far off the highways, but I don't mind going a little bit. I figure driving nine hours a day I'll get there in three days, with a couple hours worth of stops for food, photos, etc.

Thanks!

Just MHO, and likely to draw a lot of flak, but damn the photos and drive straight through, gives you more time for the food in NOLA.

Seriously, there should be a few of us with good ideas about local attractions for you along the way, have great, safe trip.

LOL. I'm going to be in Shreveport for a few months, so I don't know how the food is there... I've never been to New Orleans, but I definitely plan on spending a couple weekends while I'm there.

Since you're talking about food. You'll need to eat on the road and I suggest you don't eat until you get to Tempe so you can eat here!

Oh, wow. I think I definitely have to eat there. I'm having lunch with a friend when I pass though Phoenix, and for some reason I don't think she's going to want to eat there, but it's going to be a definite stop on the way back to L.A. if I can't there on my first pass through.

Colossal Caves sounds like it would be an interesting diversion. It's not far off your route.

One of my best friends lives in Shreveport! I'll ask her for you!! Oh and Louisianna food is the best food. I got lost there while driving and happened upon the most wonderful place and haven't been able to find it since. The gumbo and jumbalaya is the bomb and varies on who cooks it so try it everywhere!!!!!! However the real winner is the fish. They really know how to make their fish. Oh and the binet. You think doughnuts are good, you'll be in heaven!!!!

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson is amazing if you have a couple hours to spare. Beautiful desert gardens and lots of the native animals in a zoo-like setting. Tucson has tons of hotels and motels across the area, would be a good first night stop for you.

Along the way through Arizona, there's lots of old run-down gas stations and such if you're into rustic vintage stuff. I was with my wife and kid who just wanted to get to the next hotel, so I couldn't stop every few miles for photos, but there's tons of photo-ops like that through Arizona and New Mexico. Tombstone is about 1/2 hour south of the 10 just past Tucson, some old western Ghost-town stuff there. I would say go see White Sands in NM which is AMAZING, but that's a little bit out of your way since the 10 turns south at Las Cruces. Have fun!

Thanks for the tips. The museum looks pretty awesome, unfortunately I'm going to get in that area too late to see it, but it'll be on my list when I drive back through. I forgot about the white sands. the photos I've seen from that place make it looks amazing. Again, on my way back when I have lots of time to kill I WILL check that place out.

I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for abandoned places. Love stuff like that so much.

Thanks!

Ya, that place is awesome! If you can, try to plan on visiting White Sands either at sunrise or before sunset. The Sun's position really brings out the texture in the sand at these times.

Here's a tip: if the sand is in full sun and really bright, set your exposure compensation to +1 (or so) or your shots will be underexposed, or better yet use a grey card to be more precise.

Alamagordo is the closest town and a good place to stay with plenty of hotels and restaurants.

Hey Movieman,
Just a heads-up, There is an organized ride going on next week from Seligman AZ to Topock. Not far from where you'll be.

There are over 800 classic cars registered to make the ride. They will be stopping at all the historic Route 66 places along the 200 mile distance. I̢۪m told this is the most restored and actively section of Route 66.

If you aren’t going to be taking pictures of the old cars parked in front of the old storesâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦. Just remember a hotel will be difficult to find with 800 people driving across the country to make the ride.

If you see an old Gringo looking dude out thereâ€Â¦. Say hello. You might even run into some of the DPC folks driving back from the Southern Ut/Az GTG. Bring water/have a blast. I’ll be watching for your pictures when you return.
:)

30 miles outside of Deming, NM is City of Rocks (ugly little website) very small park but pretty cool rock formations.

edit to add: Just north of El Paso, TX is Hueco Tanks a very interesting outcropping of rocks. It is a Natural Historical Park with petroglyphs but also hosts a big rock climbing following. I have climbed there many times but also just enjoyed the uniqueness of the area. The number of visitors per day is restricted so you can make a reservation or just get there early in the morning as they save some spaces for last minute entries.
