I was just thinking - it'd be nice if after the challenge results were announced, there were arrows above each picture so that you could scroll through the allocated places as you would through a gallery. Same with people's portfolio images - it would make it a lot easier if you could go direct from one image to another, rather than having to go back, or keeping about 500 tabs open at once.

No idea how hard that is to do (I know nothing about websites). Just a thought though.

Yes this has been suggested many times before and I think it is a good idea.

The biggest problem with a "next image" button is that it can mean a lot of different things, depnding on how the user browsed in to the image. In other words, do you want the next image in the...

challenge results?
user's challenge history (if so, how was it sorted)?
users's portfolio listing in their profile (if so, how was it sorted)?
portfolio folder?
gallery (if the image is in two, which one)?
user's favorites list?
recently added favorites?
most favorited images?
most commented on images?

I could go on, but you probably get the idea...

Ah, I see. I'd personally be happy with just a challenge results one, I think it's better than nothing? It's open to discussion really.

I think it would be really, really helpful. i don't think there should be a problem if the arrows are simply contextualised.

So if you are on a challenge page the 'next' arrow takes you form image 1 to image 2 etc, if you are on someones portfolio, it allows you to step through it and likewise if you are on a gallery.

What you obviously couldn't have as Terry points out is one that follows a person through different areas . . or maybe you could - but that would get very confusing. Keep the arrows within context. just like when you are voting.

Have just the results list show arrows just the same as in the voting.

I think the lack of this is part of the reason the midrange shots just do not get looked at after voting. Everyone looks at the great shots, the bad shots and the DQ's, but it's too much of a bother to keep backing up to get through to the "nice" shots.

I'm always in that range, and even I don't look through them all, ONLY because it's too much of a bother!

Maybe the SC would consider trialling the 'next' arrow function on challenge entries (post challenge obviously).

then if it works it could be considered for other situations such as Galleries, or Portfolios ?

The issue is that if you're looking at an image, you're on image.php, no matter how you got there.

Ah I see - but how can it then be done during voting ? surely that's no different ?

During voting, you are looking at challenge_vote_image.php.

If you were looking at image.php, you'd see everything that you normally see on an entry post challenge (photographer, details, comments, etc) -- and you wouldn't see a voting bar.

Ahh... so it doesn't know which "next" to refer to, right?
Makes sense now, but it's still a shame.

Langdon is a god. He can do it!
04/26/2007 01:23:33 PM · #13
There are ways to go about it.

For example, you could have the "next" and "previous" buttons next to the line in the results box for the placement.

For galleries, simply split the two onto their own lines and put buttons in line with each.

Same with collections.

In other words, if "next" and "previous" can have multiple meanings, then create them on each relevant line.

This is a site that uses black as a link color, for crying out loud; surely it thinks anyone who can figure THAT out can figure out that each arrow set means something different?

This isn't a difficult design problem, Terry. Maybe Langdon doesn't want to bother with it, which is just fine, but it's not like it can't be figured out.

That's a pretty good solution, and one I hadn't thought of. I'll run it by Langdon and see what he thinks.

Langdon is pretty heavy into the DPL coding right now, so it'll probably be mid-May before this or anything else gets coding time, but I'll present it for discussion.

Thanks. Again, as with all site suggestions, Langdon's got to decide how to invest his time, and none of us can tell him what's most important.

This has been discussed before (I think Terry might have copy/pasted his response from last time =).

If you'd like, FireFox users can use my SlideShow DPCmod to fairly easily flip through challenge results.

how about, forget about the rest, but only implement for each challenge.
so the next button brings you to the next photo in the challenge position.
viewing the blue ribbon, you click next, you get the red ribbon, and so on.

Which is taken care of already. When you query the MySQL database you chose a method of sorting the rows by a particular column. Im not 100% on how to relay this data page to page through headers or session data. But as far as keeping track of the sort method it can go in the url as a variable. ?=data

Besides i believe it was initially a challenge thing which i would love too.
