I have 8 days until my membership runs out, I thought about not renewing for abit, especially since every other thread is an argument of some kind, then I realized I have looked at over 4800 photos since that stat got added to our portfolio, and how much i learn from those images, and now I'll probably get the extended portfolio space once I stop procrastinating, LoL. However I have started looking at other sites, not even necessarily challenge sites, just critique/comment sites. We'll see, there are other sites, but I got this place is where I cut my teeth and learned alot, now I'll stay and help when I can and steal a ribbon or two :P.

I know everyone has different reasons for being here, but for some it's not about the scores baby. Scores schmores as far as I'm concerned. Maybe another focus could help you decide, say, finding an audience for your particular style, or if you don't have a style, exploring what that might mean for you, taking such photos, and submitting them for critique and help. |

I let mine lapse - for a couple of months.
It was a good break.
Then I missed being able to edit my images for challenges - and I missed the update button.
So I re-upped.
Now nobody likes my photos, everybody HATES my photos, so I'm going to go eat worms.
I found that DPC as a sole source of photographic validation is an emotional rollercoaster - kind of like trying to be popular in high school. So over the two years here:
I got some photography clients - love people who vote for my photos with a check!
I now shoot for 8 tiny newspapers for trade for advertising.
I joined 3 stock sites.
I teach others photography basics (I learn a ton this way)
I decided to start shooting with models in my shots
Oh, and I enter the odd challenge still
My 5.x images here became a lot easier to handle, and the non-helpful input and lack of input, once I started selling those images for hundreds of dollars.
So DPC as a piece of my larger photo life makes DPC a nice place to be.
Good luck - no matter what you decide here. :-)

I won a ribbon. Big mistake. After that, it was all about getting better, and how am I doing that if I don't win more ribbons? Really!
I spent a couple of weeks wondering what I thought I was doing with this camera thing before realizing that I have a day job and the camera is just for fun. After that, I started having fun again. A couple of my shots are doing about where they should in the voting right now, and I've already learned something from them. . . I like them. :) I enjoy getting out and shooting, and no score is going to dissuade me from doing that. I learn something from this site almost every time I log on, and thus I'll be around for a while.
Should you decide to leave, I think that this community will miss you. We'll wonder what we could have taught you, but more importantly we'll wonder what we didn't learn from you.
Either way, good luck, keep shooting, and have fun!
(Oh, and if you do decide not to renew, please stop in and say hi every now and again anyway. :) |

Unless you are scoring 1st place on every challenge you enter there is always room for improvement, there are some seriously good photographers on this site and just by looking at other ppl's work can provide you with constant inspiration and motivation to do better.
And by just looking at other images is training your eye and teaching you new things even if you don't notice it.
So you can't really say you are creative enough for the site as there is always something new to learn, but on the other hand if you want to leave for other reasons, then that is entirely up to you of course :o)

But I like the amount I have grown using this site as a crutch and wouldnt be as good as I am today (not saying im good, just improved) without it.
Im so torn, can anyone give some words of wisdom?
Thanks

When I see threads like this I have to bite my tongue(keyboard) to keep from saying what I always want to say. However this time I'm not going to. Remember this isnt pointed at you specifically its a generalization that I make to EVERYONE who asks this question about anything not just DPC in general.
My response to this question.
"If you have to ask yourself if something your involved in is worth the .07 cents a day that it costs to be a member here, then I'd tell you to go. Its not worth your time or effort to stay if you cant find .07 cents a day worth of value. Leave the place for those of us who do find that value and more in it. The place will go on for those of us who enjoy the site and the community, with or without you, me or anyone else who leaves(except maybe Drew and Langdon). I'd suggest you go find a place thats more suitable to what you do like or feel that you need at this time in your life. If you feel after being gone that maybe there was some unseen value that you now miss, then come back and join us, we will still be here."
Either way good luck to you.

Ya ain't given up after only 18 challenges, ar ya?
Stay and fight and/or help others.
If you can help others, you end up helping/improving yourself, too.

Dewdo, I think it was fairly obvious, even before the OP posted his comment on the typo, that he meant NOT instead of NOW. Just reading on into the rest of what he wrote makes that clear.

Take a look at the portfolios of others as they have progressed over a few years. That might be inspiration to stay. If you enjoy it and want motivation to keep creating photographs, please stick around. |

I had a great (and I think unique) idea for a photographic series last night as a consequence of my free study shot and editing. I probably would not have thought of it but for the steps that I went through in my DPC photography and expert rules editing. That alone has been worth $25. I am most pleased!

Exsqueeze me, el capitan, but the stuff in your portfolio kills compared to the junk in mine!! :)
I've seen photos that score very average on this site get chosen for POTD and other site contests where they are highly thought of. If you can get past worrying about scores here, this place is a great learning experience, not to mention...stress reliever (well, except the damn update button) and you meet some really good people that are willing to help when you ask.
It's cheap entertainment!!! :P (And you will learn something, even if you try not to. :P)
Edited for typo.

Hi Dewdo, actually in another post I edit this line as it was a typo. I actual said I am not creative enough for this site. Peoples ideas and processing is far beyond my current capibilities.
Thanks for the input though

It's amazing the difference a 't' makes. So you are 'not' creative enough for this site rather than 'now' creative enough for this site? Well if you are not creative enough than it makes sense to stay so that you have the inspriation to work on it. I am by no means creative enough and rely on trying to get a good shot and do basic stuff to it but am hoping to get better over time. If it were not for DPC I would not set time aside to do it. DPC forces me to do this. By leaving you will not be doing yourself any favours. |
