Lots of people shoot with the older version of this lens, wondering whether anyone has the newer version with closer focusing (7 versus 11 inches). Not a true macro (1:3), but better than the old one (1:5).
Considering buying this to replace my kit lens, with better optics and faster. (Tired of waiting for the Pentax/Tamrac 17-50 and don't really want to pay $900 for it, and Tamron's 17-50 2.8 isn't made for Pentax.)
The old 2.8 is around on ebay for $299; the newer version goes for $419 at B&H or Adorama. Trying to decide which to get.

Nothing wrong with the old version mate, as you say its not TRUE macro anyway.. check out hanae she just got my old sigi 18-50 f2.8 and hit top slot with it and the D50 top slot on her first entry with it.
Its a tad soft wide open but really kicks in at f4, the only difference with the old and new is price and and few CM's
I reccomend it mate, nice bit of glass |
