I think the term "aspirin" used to be a proper noun (name of some company's product). It has caught on so much that the company lost patent. |
You're probably thinking of "trademark" not patent. Aspirin was a trademark in the US until it was lost due to the owner not protecting it. I think it still is a trademark in some other countries. I think Xerox is still trademarked, but is commonly used to mean "photocopy".
The companies that trademark a name usually invest a lot in advertising and marketing. If other companies can use the term they will get the benefit of that advertising and also (in theory) weaken the reputation of the original product if the other product is faulty or doesn't have all the features of the original. |

Trademark protection for aspirin was taken away from Bayer Corporation as part of the reparations/consequences for Germany after WW I. |

That's called not protecting it by supporting the wrong side.
Perhaps 'photochoppin'" would be a more appropriate term to use.

And if "Photoshiping" is not bad enough I constantly have people coming up to me saying that there is something wrong with their Adobe... and when I ask "Adobe what?" it is usualy followed by a dazed and confused look by the user.
Drives me out of my mind :/

Well that's the last straw! Why must people constantly muddy the waters -- they must be thick as a brick. What blockheads ... (puns intended) |

Luckily for Adobe, I'm too lazy to Photoshop any photos. I just PS them.

We know that it gets boring in those cold Colorado winters and that you've already done the Saran Wrap and Jell-O thing. We're just waiting for you to share the Self-Portraits with us. We know you have them... |

Lol, it must be spring fever... sooo many of the threads in the past couple days have been dragged so far from the original topic that there's no way to even navigate the maze back to it!
(but the silliness is sure a nice change :D ) |

We only tell outsiders that the Winters here are cold so that we can keep them to ourselves. People in Colorado have been known to golf on Christmas Eve. Compared to the Midwest, Colorado is downright tropical!
So swap Saran Wrap and Jell-O for a magazine and an apple and this is as close as I'll likely ever get.

she's lying everyone! Pay no attention to the little lady! Colorado is cold, it's so cold you have to chip your dog from hydrants in the winter! Go there and suffer a slow and cold death by frost bite!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Great now everyone knows...you've ruined it! As a native Coloradoian I must now remove your "evergreen" card and drive you to the Arizona border where you will be left for dead or you get to move to Pueblo...your choice ;)
