I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here....... I know I've inquired before.... but.....
I have been window shopping the Dslr's for awhile now & some of the older versions are now more affordable (& come with a lense or 2) so I am seriously going to be purchasing one soon. So, any of you with older versions, like the D40, or the Olympus evolt?, or any other... I'm not being picky yet... please post your opinions.
I also am curious if there is truelly a difference between the ones with image stabilization & without....... from personal experience.
Thanks!

Hi Drummie,

I have the D40 and am most happy with it. Rather than going over the technical pros and cons, I'll direct you to this site:

//www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

Although there are things on other dSLRs that Nikon left out on the D40 (in-camera motor, depth of field preview, etc.), it takes excellent pictures and is still quite new (so the CCD is more "up-to-date" than some of the higher end cameras).

If you're in North America, you can always buy it from Costco, and return it if you're not satisfied.

Edit to fix URL.

The D40's real faults would be, no drive motor but shouldnt affect new photographers. Its really small, and in complicated line situations the sensor produces a moire.

Over all its a great little camera and has some features you wont find on the D50.

Canon 10D's have dropped a lot in price over the years but are still very good cameras.

I saw 10D's, refurbished from Canon with Warranty, in the $400-$500 range the other day. Cannot find the site now, but that is a lot of camera for not much money.

If you're looking at the D40 (rather than the D40x) maybe have a look at the D50. Same(ish) 6MP sensor, but better build and more(ish) features. I love mine.

If price is the main concern but you still want a good camera with lots of support, I see 5 choices. The new choices would be a Canon 350D, Nikon D50 or Pentax K100D (in that order). The used choices would be Canon 10D and Nikon D70 (in that order).
