And, believe me, the children are viewing AND voting. They have really good taste, too! 8-)

The warning on ShutterCity.com may be nice, but it can be real annoying after a visitor tries to view several photos.

It should be one time option to accept these photos or deny them.

Is there an option for members to disable this warning?

I thought the anti-nudity crowd already has a filter to turn off nude pictures????

If they want a warning prior to nude photos, do we also get the option of some warning prior to total crap snapshots?

Agree with dimitrii, greenem, kirbic. Am very tired that the 'for the children' argument is always brought up when issues of nudity censorship is raised. This isn't a family site and it isn't especially geared towards children.

I think the function to block nude images only operates after someone has voted on the image--the thumbnail is replaced by a "not available" piece of art.

All us parents had to sign a waiver acknowledging the type of images available here, and agreeing to not hold either the site or individual photographers responsible for anything.

We can all handle our own kids' participation. I'm gonna guess that every kid who is a member here has already seen a naked person, and probably some nude artwork as well. I personally don't find shielding Isaac from "tastefully done" nudity is of any advantage to either of us, but each parent and kid here should be free to make their own decisions.

I have three children ages 4,5 and 10, I can not recall any photo on this site that I would not have wanted them to view, granted I do not sit them down to view every photo here, but if they walk in while I am viewing a "questionable" photo and make a comment on it, it opens up doors to communication that normally would not be opened. I am one who does not want to shelter my children from the world, any base that I can cover before they leave home makes them better to take on the world and all of it's trials and tribulations.

It really isn't the nudes I have a problem with but the recent rash of the drug related photos. Kids get this pushed down there throats at school and then to see it here just makes them think there is something good about it after all. If there is anything I would like to hide from my screen once I am done voting it is those images. My little boy has been exposed to the artful side of nudity for the past few years and understands it fairly well, but to try and tell him that drugs can be art too is a lot for a 6 year old to comprehend.

Despite the fact that I feel, occasionally, 'aesthetically' offended by a photo, should I request a site option that would shelter me and my kids from what I consider an undesirable and malicious influence, all things being equal?

Or guns ... I think the average kid sees something in excess of 10,000 killings depicted by the time they're 18 ....

Very well said! I don't see why so many Americans are so pent up on censorship. It's the human body, one of the most spactacular creations on Earth. I want my daughter to understand why women and men are different and to not be afraid of her own body.

As for the drug issue, it's a fact of life... it's everywhere. Some are good, (asprin) and some are bad, (heroin). It just depends on how you talk to your children about it and even then they'll make their own decisions. Why try and hide it from them when they'll find out one way or the other...? Either from you or from a drug dealer looking to make a sell and customer.

WARNING... The Nude challenge may contain nude photos that are unsuitable for younger children... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Thank you

It is not nearly so cut and dried, however. I have worked in the field of substance abuse since 1975, and specifically with opiate addicts since 1986. The US policy on drugs has almost everything to do with profiteering and social control, and about 2% to do with the actual deleterious effects of various substances on the human body.

Sorry for the digression but I have a professional responsibility to make sure people have accurate medical information. Anyone if free to email me if they have further questions/comments.

Ok now that the 3 of us have said our pet peeves and what we really don't like seeing all the time does anyone care enough to help us parents out here with those things? I actually have a problem even voting on the drug related photos cause I think the world is screwed up enough, but it don't come online to see more drugs I come here to get away from it all and then find the stuff here at my favorite site. I mean come on kids don't need to suddenly have drugs, guns and violence thrown in front of them now as art. That just confuses them.

It may not all 'be' art, but even that which aspires to be art will not be confined to any narrows.

What do you suggest doing? Photography represents life in many ways, and drugs, guns, and violence are certainly part of life. This site is not a safe house from the world. If this site were to become a land of smiling faces, colorful flowers, and dancing children it might be a nice place to ignore the unpleasant parts of life, but it is a place I would no longer have much interest in visiting.

In case it wasn't clear, I have no problems with the site rules or any photographs I've seen here (well, maybe a little with a couple which "disappeared") and am not advocating any further restrictions on entries.
07/16/2003 12:42:17 AM · #43
I dont' want the restrictions but geesh if we can hide nude photos why can't we have an option to hide photos that deplict drugs and violence too.

I'm not complaining about the nude photos...I don't even try to hide them!

It depends on whether the flagging process is individual, or if a photo gets flagged for everyone by the artist, admins, or a user. I don't know how that process works since I've never wanted to flag any photos. If it is a setting each person can apply to a photo governing only their own view of it, then just use the "nudity" flag as a general "R-rated" marker and suppress any photos you want to.

It was just a general warning (not to the general necessarily)

I just want to hide the ones that make me cringe.
