Well for a change I had MANY photos and several subjects to chose from this week, as I decided on what to submit; more than I care to remember. Then, after trying to decide which ones to trash and which ones to edit, how much or how little adjusting and cropping to do to each photo, I had to decide which ones I liked best. After all of my efforts, I realized this weekend how much time some of the photos I have seen here on DPC must have taken to achieve the end result... whew! In the end, I submitted the photo I thought had the most visual impact, and probably the lower score. Anyway, I think I know what I could have done to make the outtakes better, but being new to photography I would greatly appreciate any input that any of you might have on the photos I came up with. Thanks in advance! Outtakes |

I am not familiar with that legend, that said, if it is about red birds why not zoom in on the bird, a 300MM lens would have been super for this and then crop out the extra trees/pole like this? i maybe all wet but I like simple and dramatic. raise up your shutter speed a bit for crispness.....

hey thanks for the input! I like both of your crops.. I had a similar crop to your version of the two birs looking at each other, but I needed to make the crops the size I did so they would fit into the DPC pic "size" requirements... maybe there is something I don't know about cropping? maybe not.. I just know if I don't crop the same ratio as the required size, when I shrink it down to meet the submission size, the photo gets streched and warps the subject matter to a new proportion... kind of like this but I acctually like this one.. lol... hopefully you have seen what I am describing... thanks! |

For now you need to compromise composition to meet the required cropping ratios. The fixed aspect ratio requirement will be eliminated when the site update ("DPC2") goes into effect. |

Here is my outtake for the Superstitions challenge
Any thoughts? It is a small crop from a much larger pic due to a busy skyline.

I like the subtle quality in the sky, but I'm not partial to having so many branches/leaves out of focus and then some others quite sharp. It's a good example of a superstition well-known around the world, albeit within a limited segment of the population. I also think this is an example of what I would consider over-sharpening, specifically along the roofline of the steeple, the branches to the left, and the birds. There's not enough to look like haloing or flare from the sun, but too much fringing to look its best. This seems to be more of a problem with low-resolution images; I usually reduce both the amount and radius of the Unsharp Mask settings in Photoshop.
Here's the only alternate I considered entering (I don't post outtakes until after the challenge -- too close to my entry). |

Thanks for the advice guys... as for DPC2, any idea when it will go into effect?
the red skies photo I like... especially the amber color above the roofline... might look even nicer if the red was saturated up just a smidge... maybe
curious, the shoes on the phone lines were interesting.. I take it this was an urban legend of a sort and not just a movie???
as for posting outtakes before the challenge is up... I did not post the outtakes that would have given my entry away.. :o) |

thanks for the comments. the differential focus on the trees are because some are very close and some are very far. . like i said, crowded skyline.. : )
the shoes -- interesting. i dont get the title, or the urban legend, but im thinking zooming in on one pair or cluster would be a stronger shot than trying to capture the whole scene.
My outtake is also an 'alternate' in the sense that it has no similarity to what i submitted .. :P
