Hey all,

I turned on my computer this morning, and all the icons were huge and everything seems out of proportion. I checked my monitor settings, and it's at 800 x 600 with 32 bit color. I've tried increasing the resolution, and I get the error message from my monitor that any higher settings are "out of frequency range". I've never seen that error before. Does that mean my monitor is dying? If so, can I fix it? Or do I need a new one? What kind should I get if I DO need a new one?

Thanks!

Set your monitor to the lowest refresh rate it supports (probably 60hz) and then up your resolution.

If it can do a higher resolution at 60hz, slowly bump up the refresh rate until it won't go any higher without giving you the out of range message.

Also, make sure that your monitor is defined as "Plug and Play Monitor" or as your specific monitor, if that selection is available.

Your monitor is fine, it's just your settings that are messed up.
Windows must have lost, or never had, the information for your monitors capability range. Use the "Advanced..." button of the "Display, Settings" tab and on the dialog that comes up select the "Monitor" tab. Use the "properties" button to set your monitor type. Once this is done you should then only be able to select resolutions and refresh rates that your monitor supports and you wont get the "Out of Range" message.

If you cant find your monitor in the list then it is ok to leave it set as "Unknown monitor". You will need to use the "Monitor" tab to set the refresh rate to 60 Hertz after you increase the resolution but before you click "Apply". You wont necessarily have the optimum setting but it will likely be ok.

Then again if someone set disability options on, or large icons or large fonts, or them all.

I guess you people forgot about all that.

could also be a graphics card problem... not sure - just putting the idea out there for a look into if everything else suggested doesnt work

I changed it to a plug and play monitor and did what zardoz suggested and it worked great. Thanks!
