I have a Nikon D40 and the SB-400 flash. I'd like to get the SC-28 (or SC-17) and use the SB-400 flash externally from the camera, but I'm unable to determine whether or not this is possible.

If it is, great! If not, can I do so with the SB-600? (Prelim. research seems to say "yes".)

Thanks.

Bumping this, since it was submitted very early in the morning.

Well. The D40 and SB-400 were made for each other. (Wikipedia: The D50 "was launched accompanied by a new small kit lens, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II; [5] and a new small Speedlight, the i-TTL SB-400 featuring a 21 m guide number and a vertically tilting head.[6]"

If you look at pages 99 and 101 of the D40 Manual you'll find the relevant parts.

Thank you for the response, Eugene.

I had looked at those pages, and found them to be explaining using a flash as a commander or slave. My question was aimed more at the use of an external flash via the SC-28 flash cord.

In other words, does the SC-28 act simply as an "extension" of the hot shoe? If so, then using it with the SB-400 shouldn't be a problem (since there's no concern about additional flashes, etc.). However, I wanted to confirm this, since I don't have a lot of experience with external flashes.

Thanks.
