One must also keep in mind that what you get out of something on a personal level is in no way indicative of what that thing is on an over-all level.

This all comes back to the original post.

The PROBLEM always becomes such when we start believing that what we as an individual feel, must be the normal, ethical, moral, standard, whatever.. for everyone.

I feel that people shouldn't vote down because of lack of originality/subject matter/emotional impact/etc... and so it must be so.

I feel that learning and teaching is the primary aspect... and so it must be so.

I feel that Cheddar Cheese is the tastiest damn cheese on the planet... and so it must be so.

That's where the real problem lies.

Also, I'm not saying we should never try and work at making changes, or offering input, or stating our opinions.. but what I am saying is that when we *do* do it, it should never be done in an offensive/attacking/negative/etc. kind of way. There are so many ways of getting our point(s) across without making other people feel the need to go on the offensive immediately. (Although granted, some people will go on the offensive if you even compliment them wrong). We just need to find a way to stop making it seem like our way of thinking is the only way of thinking..

Somehow. I'm not immune to it either.. and I usually am grateful for anyone that points out if I'm being irrational.

Soup, thank you for posting that original message.

Take from this site what you will, the ribbons, the comments, the tutorials, the "friendly converstaion", the critiques, etc. It's all here for you to accept or reject how ever you wish.

Discussing it can certainly bring about some creative improvements on the system. And if you are going to "Discuss" something, don't just babble on senslessly. Send a recommendation in to make it better. Keep changing the site to make it better for everyone. Now, granted, you will have to start thinking outside of yourselves and for some that can be a daunting task, but remember that you need to consider the well being of others and not just so that you can take a blue ribbon, or high score and feel better about yourself.

Round table discussion is great, but unless it's constructive towards developing an outcome, it's really just babble. Friendly babble- but babble none the less.

Not getting anything out of this site? Stay on here for a year and look at the portfolio you just built for yourself. Quite a few memories huh. Here's a question- would you have taken that many phtos, if you weren't being challenged?

Remember to make someone on this site smile today... and try to critcize another tomorrow- that way it balances out and we can get back to what we came here for- to take some photos!!jk

well your welcome - sort of. it still doesn't mean every memeber here feels or thinks that same way. but originally that was the underlying reason for registering the domain name. thinmgs have a tednency to evolve over time though. and that original idea may have changed a bit.

i do find all the arguing about it pseudo-amusing. it's right there in black & grey... ;}

for the record here is what the creators of DPC have to say about their website...

DPChallenge was created in January 2002 by two friends, Drew Ungvarsky (drewmedia) and Langdon Oliver (langdon). The original idea behind the site was for it to be a place where the two of us and a couple of our friends could teach ourselves to be better photographers by giving each other a 'challenge' for the week. The idea quickly took off and became much more in the months that followed.

Oh thank you Soup!! This is the reason why I say this site is a teaching site. The challenges teach us to be better photographers.

I don't agree with how some people vote, but they vote they way they do. As you read this thread, then the post turned and I said I felt this was a teaching site. I hope that those who said I was arrogant, blind and over zealous, maybe see where I was coming from. I felt hurt by some of the comments made. I truly thank Drew and Langdon for creating this site. I know I have learned quite a bit and have so much more to learn.

I'm pretty sure you're including me in that, but again, I never said you personally were arrogant. I only challenged as arrogant your presumption that every entrant in DPC's challenges is motivated by learning.

Maybe since we seem about to go around for the second time on the "you're arrogant no I'm not yes you are" concept, and we're FAAAAR away from the original post, it's time to lock this?

Agreed. Back to your corners, guys.
