what is with that little hook thing on all these lenses...is it to hok it onto a belt for a temporary period while switching lenses or something?

It is the tripod collar. With a lens that big you mount the lens to the tripod not the camera.

On my Nikon 80-200 lens, it also has a SUPER use.

By mounting on the collar you can rotate on-the-same-axis of the lens from Landscape to Portrait! It is very fast and convenient.

On the Sigma 80-400 (and probably some others, too), it doubles as a nice, comfortable carrying handle for the whole camera/lens combination. Quite convenient, really.

can you take it off ..personally it is useless weight if youre not useing a tripod and also it looks kind of cool and hightec if you leave it on to someone who doesnt know what a dslr is exactly but to me it is indof stupid looking...

One can certainly remove the tripod collar, although I find that, with a 70-200 it is useful even when hand-holding. I find that the base of the collar sits right in my palm at, or near, the point of balance and I can operate the zoom ring easily with finger and thumb, while supporting the lens with my palm. To be completely accurate, though, I haven't tried it without the collar.

What's a couple ounces when you've got a lens heavy enough to need one?

You can take it off, but mine stays on the 70-200 all the time. Why? Well, besides the hassle of keeping tack of it, and re-mounting it when i sant to use a tripod, it *does* make a nice pocket hook! I sling the camera strap over my shoulder, put the tripod collar "foot" in my back jeans pocket and voila! No weight on the strap. I can walk all day that way.

lol i actually do use the collar to hold it from my pocket sometimes... not the safest thing though.
