I've been slightly MIA the last couple of days.
I've been doing a couple of 30-day challenges, even keeping caught up. But a couple of ignorant, judgmental comments on my last portrait entry kind of took the wind from my sails. They are not comments about the PHOTO, but rather judgments about the model (rather - about what she is shown doing - nursing her one-year old son).
Gotta try to get back into it today and catch up.
Besides - it's my favorite photo from the session I had with her, and she and I both KNOW she's doing the absolute best thing for her son.

don't worry about it. some people just can't cope with it - it's their problem, not yours.

Try to keep yourself above reacting to such things. Remember that you place your photos on here to be judged, and people will do that, some of those people leaving their opinion in comments.
It's their opinion, they are free (and encouraged) to leave it, just as you are free to ignore the comments, or take them to heart and be dragged down by them.
Also remember that if you get a bad comment, then at the very least your photograph has provked a reaction. That is half the job right there. |

Go to the poster's house and have a nurse-in on their front lawn! ;P
People can be so ignorant about some of life's best things. |

Does anyone know a good inexpensive way to calibrate a monitor. What looks good on my laptop at home does not necessarily look good on my monitor at work. |

As well as being rude and more a reflection of the poster than the photo or model, it's generally considered a breach of ethics at DPC and should be reported to SC.
PLEASE do so as it's difficult enough to find willing models without them being attacked on a personal level.
On a personal level, please know that it's not about you or your model, it's a projection of the poster's issues and we all know you well enough to know how wrong this behavior is to be directed to you and your model.

I recently shelled out $100 CDN for a Pantone Huey - I'm liking it quite well so far.

Thank you Jeb. I actually already did report one comment.
To the best of my knowledge, my model has not seen the comments here - and since she is planning on buying print(s) of that photo - SHE obviously likes it. And that is even more important than if *I* like it, after all, she is a paying customer.

Hmmmm I got this comment "blah blah blah" I'm not quite sure how to take it. Either my image sucks so much it's blah times 3 or the commentor really didn't have anything to say, but then why type anything. Odd. |

Or maybe the commenter is hoping that you'll mark it as helpful and they can boost their own stats.. ("look, I commented on all the images here!")

Wow, I just got back to TS from a four-day absence because I've been entertaining a house guest. A lot of significant discussion has been going on. Most of what I would have to say about scores and TS culture has already been said very well by others. Jeffrey, Jeb, and Don all struck cords with me (but that doesn't exclude many other important opinions).
I'm just going to add my two cents by posting my current scores. I think they are an excellent example of what we are capable of here at Team Suck. I delight in surprise over the first one, and pretty much agree with the voters on the second one. No ranting, no raving, no whining, just acceptance and a determination to learn to take better landscapes. That was my second attempt at HDR, and I can see I still haven't got the hang of it yet.

Holy cow, that's one heck of an insect you got there! Nice work.
And I came to the conclusion the other night that I think the perfect challenge entry would be a 5.2 or lower score with a "10" and a comment from Posthumous or any other Team Suck member that "got" it. :-) Christian, it sounds like your landscape may be the perfect challenge entry. |

I'm gonna latch onto this statement as this is something that I hadn't put my finger on yesterday during the discussion.
Not only have my techniques changed, but I'm trying new things 'cause I'm not afraid to, in fact I'm eager to try new things that may improve my style or end result. This overcoming my fear has come as a result of what I've learned here.
I discovered last weekend when I was out of town shooting jpeg and using PS 7.0 just how far I've come......I shoot RAW and use CS2 now so I all but felt crippled last weekend! I still got some decent shots, but I avail myself of so much more than the normal jpeg setting on my D70s and MS Office Picture Manager for my editing.
BTW, my mentor is having a little bit of blue funk about his work, so I told him to stop by and join the fun.....I hope he does, he's a super guy!

The 10's and comments from Posthumous are truly the indicators of success -- "The kiss of death" as someone else aptly put it a while back. I would also include Favorites. Those thrill me no end. |

I agree on the favs. I just got another one on my 5.0 Spinning shot (that makes two now) and I got three yesterday on the Bicycle shot I didn't enter. Totally made my day! |

I agree with the rest of what you said, Jeb, but I disagree that a comment criticizing the subject is unethical or inappropriate, as long as it doesn't use foul language. I don't mean "your model is ugly," but rather the subject matter. But even "the model is ugly" isn't something to complain to the SC about, IMO. We have to be adults and accept that some people might not like what we shoot, not go complaining to SC to make it all better.
Kashi, you know some people don't think breastfeeding should continue past a certain age. How you react is up to you. Given your opinions, I suggest ignoring them.

I suspect you're right about that.
So, ignore them I shall, as I step out this afternoon to drop my Statement of Commitment in the mail to La Leche League Canada. Soon I will have a card in the mail that states I am an official LLL Leader ! It's been almost 18 months of work to get there, and I'm glad to be finishing the studying portion.

JuliBoc congrats on that insect score you have going! Sounds like a PB for you - and following your excellent night shot, too!
I've got a fun idea for kitchenware - and some thoughts for bubbles. Anyone else in? |
