or, get the ad-killer (ads-gone) from www.pcworld.com
I have it, and I browse the internet in "silence" now. No adds, no banners, nada, zilch. BLISS!

By any chance, as these pop ups grey boxes labeled "messenger service"? If so, or if these are part of the problem, you can do this...
- Click on the Start button in the taskbar
-- Open Control Panels
-- Go to "Administrative Tools" (XP users may need to go to "Performance and Maintenance" first, then "Administrative Tools")
-- Double-click on "Services"
-- Scroll down to "Messenger"
-- Double-click on "Messenger"
-- Change the Startup type to "Disabled"
-- Click "Stop" to stop the service
AOL has pop up controls where you can turn all the pop ups, or allow them from certain web sites, not allow them at all, or allow all of them. I really like this about AOL.

Ever since Yahoo bought out Prodigy and became Yahoo SBC, they've been a totally crap service all around. I'd suggest dumping them regardless of the popup issue.
In the meantime, I'd suggest running Adaware in case you have something installed that's creating these popups. |

I use a freeware program from //www.popupstopper.com -- seems to work quite well.
Spam & pop-up ads are going to eventually kill the Internet entirely... |

Where's that setting, and which version of AOL do you need? |

People used to say postal junk mail would render the postal service unusable.
Eventually I think so much spam will be stopped it will literally take billions to make even a reasonable return, so it will just be too much effort.

Keyword "Pop Ups". I think that AOL 7.0 MIGHT have it, but I know that 8.0 does. If you have a lesser AOL, you can get a free 8.0 disc at almost any supermarket. Target, Walmart, Meijer have them here. Also Best Buy and Circuit City have them. OR you can goto Keyword Upgrade and get the most recent version of AOL. If you have the right version, a little box will show up at the bottom of all web pages. It will say "allowing pop-ups" or "blocking pop-ups". You can also just click on that button to set your pop up preferences.
8.0 is the best version of AOL I have ever had in my 8 or 9 years using it. And I hear 9.0 is even better. It is well worth it to upgrade. Also more spam blocking options.

Thanks--I'm still on 6.0 but have lots of installer CD's lying around (get them at work, too). Hadn't heard about 9 coming out--didn't they just release 8? Any idea if they'll ever release an upgrade to the Mac version (still at 5)?
I also used your instructions to disable the Messenger service! I think that was most of the problem. |

Myabe you should try mozilla. It has some nice preferences for blocking pop-ups and the like. |

I use Yahoo SBC as well and have no problems with pop-ups. It's probably something running in the background like spyware. I highly recommend the program Spybot - Search & Destroy.
