Early Wednesday morning I'm starting on a trek to SLC from Seattle. I'm hoping I will find some great photo opportunities along the way, I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks! |

Hey, maybe we should have an impromptu GTG while you're in SLC. There's quite a few of us in the area...How long will you be there? |

As David and Marianne both mentioned, you ought to seriously consider a slightly more indirect route to SLC proper, and detour through Cache Valley (Logan, UT). Nice town, plenty to see and do, and some great scenery both in the valley itself and in the canyons to the east and west. Of course, I may be just a bit prejudiced since I grew up there, but I doubt you'd regret the trip given a few extra minutes. From there, you're only 90 miles to SLC (about 1 1/2 hours).
Paul. |

Oh yes! Cache Valley is so beautiful, lots of mountainous recreation spots and great cultural entertainment (Utah Festival Opera, Lyric Theater, etc.) We'd show you a great time! |

Hi All, a GTG sounds great. I will only be there thru Sunday. My family lives in SLC (I grew up there) and my father has been quite ill and he is in a rehab center right now so I want to come town to spend time with him.
Thanks for the tips. I might take an early morning trip to Cache Valley after I arrive.

What about an early morning GTG in Cache Valley Saturday morning? See if we can catch some of the magic light? |

That sounds great! David and I would love to do that. How 'bout you Paul? Jeremy? Any other No. Utah folks? Where should we meet?
Sorry about your father Joann, I hope he recovers quickly.

Sounds fun! I'm going to have to work something out... my brother and I were planning to set up at the Gardner's Market for the first time this Saturday (heirloom zucchini, fresh cilantro, carrots, beets, and possibly some tomatillos this time around)-- it runs from about 8:30 to noon or so. Let me know what the plans are, and I'll see what I can make fit.

Hey a GTG would be fun. Saturday morning I am already headed out to the Albion Basin to take pictures at 6 AM. Here is a link to some information and I can post more if anyone is interested in going as well. Albion Basin It sounds like you will be able to get some good mountain/wildlife/wildflower photos. Let me know if plans to go elsewhere. |

Wow, that sounds like an excellent idea! Actually I plan on going to
Hogle Zoo and photograph a Zebra that blends with the background LOL.
PS: I'm game for anything.

Dang, I may have to get up early on my day off and head up to the basin.... I've been stealing all sorts of great places to go from the Wasatch Camera Club site, Jeremy -- at least the ones I haven't already been to. |

Paul, where is the Gardner's Market? |
It's held in Logan every Saturday morning in the small park behind the Tony Roma's restaurant. Exact address would be something like 130 South and just West of 100 East. My favorite part is the bread-- there is a baker from Kamas (last name is Volker) that brings his stuff every week... he has (in my opinion) the absolute BEST foccacia and asiago cheese breads, as well as a number of other specialty breads (and free samples of all of them! :-). |

The gardener's market is a really fun place to go, my band plays there sometimes, not this week though. And I agree about the bread, especially with that olive oil/garlic dipping sauce. Mmmmmm!
Kali, I'm a Moron... : )

Kali, my dad is actually in a place in Sandy. Hopefully I can help him get home sooner because he hates it there. My mom says it is a nice place but you hear so many horror stories about how older people are treated, I have to go and see for myself. |

Yeah, Healthsouth is in Sandy up on 1300 east and 7800 south... if I remember correctly. I lived on Carnation drive, man I haven't thought about that house in years! Thanks for the washing machine of memories this thread has stirred up! |

:) LOL. I want to take a photo of a tiger laying on a tiger print couch or bed now. I've got to figure out what time to get up Sat. morning to make it up there in time. Here is a link to the trailhead from Alta Ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon. - Albion Basin Road and Trail I just realized that I've been there last year and it is awesome. I hiked to Cecret Lake, the GPS coords for the tech geeks is, N 40 34.283 W 111 37.461. There is a geocache at those coordinants. There is also a waterfall by the lake that my friend rappelled down. It is a beautiful area. I can't wait to go even more now because I've been there and now what it looks like. |

I propose that those of us in Cache Valley (the Logan area) meet at the farmers market! Then Jo Anns can move south to meet you Salt Lake Valley folks.
We've got your whole itinerary planned, Jo Ann!

I wonder how I can get to Cache Valley and be back for the morning light at Albion Basin. :)
But, seriously, I probably will not be able to meet up with anybody this trip. I didn't realize how dependent my mother was going to be on me to make sure she got to see my dad in the rehab center - twice a day. There's something about the traffic around SLC/Sandy that she doesn't like - I thought Seattle drivers were aggressive! Is there a rule here that when someone signals to get into a lane that, by all means, make it impossible for them to do so? I did have one woman back off to let me in then I saw Idaho plates on her car. Hmmmm. No Offense :)
Anyway, I do plan on coming down in the Fall to plant my mom's tulip bulbs. It will be a longer, better trip for me. But, I am going to spend some time with my niece Saturday Morning, driving around and taking photos and having her model for me. If we go to the Farmers Market or Albion, I'll holler out some names. Also, I will be the 6 foot tall, 50 year old, overweight gal with a gorgeous blond, thin, 19 year old niece. You can't miss us.
I left Redmond just before 4:00 am and I got some gorgeous (I hope) photos of the sunrise at 5:30. It was a beautiful drive, it's only because I am a now photographer that my long trip was a joy. Another positive side effect of my digital camera purchase :).
One More Thing - can you turn down the heat a bit? Thank you! |

Drat. We were looking forward to it. And you're right: Utah drivers are, generally speaking, more rude than drivers in many other states. Idaho drivers learn to be careful because they never plow the roads there in the winter. Hope the opportunity comes to see you sometime, Jo Ann. Love your garden shots in the other thread, BTW.

I'll be setting up at the farmer's market with my dad tomorrow... my brother is attending a wedding in Salt Lake, so my dad's taking my brother's place. Anyway, David (and anyone else... ) hope to see you there! |

I am back in Seattle, quite tired from the drive and emotional strain. But, the good news is, my dad is recovering and just needs to get his strength back.
I did manage to escape up to the Albion Basin on Saturday Morning. I picked up my niece at 6:00 pm and arrived at Albion around 6:30. The first thing we saw was a moose! Of course, I couldn't get a photo of it because I'm not fast enough. Then we saw a deer and I didn't even try to get my camer ready for that one. But, I did get many, many photos and two or three good ones which are in my portfolio.
I am sorry I didn't get to meet any of you. Next time I come to town I will make time for a photo excursion. Maybe some nice autumn colors? Thanks for your good wishes -- they helped a lot. |
