o, yeah, and if you would like to read a pretty concise explanation of what i believe about photography, read purpleflutterby13's bio. that's about it, really, innit?

o, and i have 3 very nice comments on my 4.7 landscape. i'm expecting a very wide range of scores, from those who appreciate the abstract, to those who just say - wha? that looks empty...

I haven't had a chance yet to catch up on all the posts, I will do that soon, but I had a question.

What is the "wish list" under the photo in the current challenge? Is it for selling prints? I have a 1 next to it in this challenge. If it is, then do I find out who that person is after the challenge? Does anyone here sell pictures?

Yep, someone wants to buy a print of your entry!! very cool congrats and yes after voting it should show. You have to set up an acct. in dpc prints, then upload a printable version of your shot.

WooHoo! Can I have everyone's attention please? I'm waving a white flag here... I'm sorry if I offended anyone. And Don, your right, those are two people I definitely was NOT thinking about when I wrote that. I've had the day away to think about what I wrote and think I was just in a bad place this morning. Just for the record, I never advocated kicking anyone out of TS. It was just a thought that for people who's scores become their main focus that they themselves might feel it was time for them to move on. I'm also not saying that I'm going anywhere, just that I no longer feel all that comfortable moaning about my 4.xxx scores when people are complaining about their 6.xxx scores. I get enough of that in the scores threads. I don't really know what I'm complaining about. Personally, I would love to get a 6 and would also probably mention it. So, just ignore me... 'kay?

Okayâ€Â¦..my two centsâ€Â¦

I won’t apologize for my wondrous awe at being a little disappointed and no longer thrilled with a score less than 6.0. It’s because of being hereâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦the support, advice, tips, techniques, insight, development, feedbackâ€Â¦.get the idea?

I learned this stuff here. I am a *much* better photographer because I have been developing my skills through the magic of what goes on here. It has less to do with the camera I use and what I point it at than it does the ability to see, and capture, the image that I want to in the way that I want to, as well as being able to process the result.

It’s been a group effort, and I’m a richer PERSON for it as well. And to you who would say that anyone may have outgrown this? Pshaw! I know that I’ll never outgrow the need to occasionally be slapped down ‘cause I am looking at a criticism the wrong wayâ€Â¦..I’ll never outgrow the feeling of delight when *someone else* here gets a new personal best.

I played on a lacrosse team 35 years ago that was just incredibleâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦we killed EVERYBODY!!!!!!!! We were the smallest team in the league but we had a magic in the way that we worked together that was a one-in-a-million kind of thing. It wasn’t even so much that we were better than the next guys, but we worked together in such a manner that we were unstoppable as a working team.

I’m seeing the same thing here. And that was my point this morning when I started busting off about the 6+ scoresâ€Â¦..look how many people on Team Suck are growing, excelling, and making an impression across the board.

ANDâ€Â¦..we are steadily acquiring not only visibility, but respect and appreciation. Take heart and joy every time that one of us does betterâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦you’re all a part of that just the same way that we all are here for each other when one of us gets hurt, physically, emotionally, the way that we take the time to share the little things that we know that might save another grief or timeâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦and *willingly*â€Â¦..none of the keeping it for ourselves!

And the successes! We’re ALL a part of that! I remember when Svetlana was just your ordinary, talented, beautiful womanâ€Â¦..okay, bad exampleâ€Â¦..8>).

Seriouslyâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦she loves us and we her! I just want to jump up and cheer every time she has another great happening. Look at Jeff and Bobâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦they have become our sagesâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦and their talents have gotten such that I haven’t heard them grumble in a long time, and I know that they’re always there with a good word. Catherine? She certainly taught me how to deal with disappointment like a grownupâ€Â¦..Kashi? Remember how terrified she was about that first portrait shoot? And how despondent she was when it went south? And these guys *are* what TS is all aboutâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦Mary, we love and miss you!

Soâ€Â¦..back toâ€Â¦..I’m eagerly awaiting my next 6.0 so I can crow about it a littleâ€Â¦..’cause that means that Team Suck will have taken my profile page to a point where it’s all 6+ shots! I don’t care about that for the DPC thing, well, a little, but it just goes to show you if TS can make that much of a difference for this whiny, semi-bi-polar, fickle, knuckleheaded, self-centered, wack-jobâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦well, it can certainly happen for a regular person.

I could not, and would not, have been able to do what I can do now without what I have learned here, and it̢۪s a whole lot more about the philosophy, camaraderie, and the magic of Team Suck than takin̢۪ f*ckin̢۪ pictures!

I had yesterday off work so I went shooting in the thumb. Here is one of the many shots that I took. I'm kind of happy with it. My favorite one is in the Free Study so I can't show that one.

Edit:

Here is another one.

Hey, Christian, you can now buy "precision laser drilled pinhole" lenses. :) I liked your description of your homemade one better!

Would you be willing to share again what this can do for a shot? Examples would really help. Thanks!

Your point reminds me of when I taught rockclimbing. I used to say that if you weren't falling, you weren't improving. That's how I feel about many photographers I see at DPC. It's the same shot over and over and over. Even if it's a beautiful shot, there's no growth. It's what drives me to find new ways to shoot the DC memorials. Everyone's seen them a million times, but can I figure out some new way to do it?

My night shot was most definitely an effort to get people wondering. :) But it was mostly a technique experiment. I'm with you, skewsme, that an emotional response is even better.

No problem, I'm very glad you linked it with your's, I am still very much a newbie with PS myself and DK's comment has spurred me to really get a handle on the use of layers. I recently aquired Joey L's DVD on post processing and he goes into using layers in it which has been very helpful for me. Just an FYI, he has another DVD coming out soon where he goes over some more recent shots if anyone is interested.

I think there is something I'd like to say about stuff... if there are people who get discouraged about not being able to brag about a 6+ score - there's always *something* you can brag about. And what I have realized is that if I post something here that I am proud of - it doesn't have to be a high score - people will be happy for me and excited for me!

It's easier to notice the high scores. So it is easier for someone to say "oh hey, look at so-and-so, they got a high score". But that doesn't mean that just because people aren't mentioning other things, they aren't happy for you. If I post something here saying I'm super proud of this post-processing, and get happy feedback because of that, I'm not going to be as unhappy that I don't get the higher scores, and am less likely to be resentful when high-score talk goes on.

One thing I tried to do in the older thread was "call out" a few people for awesome things that weren't high scores. It takes a bit of work but it seemed to be worth it. I hoped that it was something that we could make into a continuing practice but it did not become that. I ask that maybe people keep it in mind?

Of course, that is not to say that I'm not appreciative of what TS *does* do. OOBIES and YAPPIES and being a team that *will* be so happy if there is something neat posted, regardless of score... all of these are FANTASTIC and really a lot more than a lot of groups might be used to. I guess what I am saying is that the OOBIES and YAPPIES being in another thread means that a lot of the recognition here is either for high scores or self-initiated.

There's different ways to approach it; oobies and yappies probably should still have a separate thread but maybe posting what they are (and not just that the results were posted) in this thread could help. I know I spend most of my time in this thread. Likewise, we could move score talk to a separate thread. However, I really think that if we periodically go out of our way to "call out" people for neat little things that aren't high-score related, that will take care of it perhaps more than the other ideas.

By the "calling out" I mean that if you see something neat in a portfolio shot or an overlooked challenge shot... comment on the image but maybe put in the thread, as well, "oh hey, did you check out so-and-so's shot? I really liked the way that the lighting enhanced the subject", for example.

Anyway, all of this is not to say that I see anything "wrong" with team suck. On the contrary. I just think that even if we're awesome, we could always become more so. :-)

That's great to hear about Joey's DVD. I was just telling my son that we need to get that. Thanks for letting us know about the new dvd coming out.

Oh! I'm jealous as well! Now I really do need to figure out how to get myself over there. And how to get tickets, etc. Spamalot! My mom has the soundtrack. She sings along in her car... :-)

Cool about the wedding thing, and even cooler that someone put a shot of yours on their page AND credited the shot!

Kelli, white flag not needed. Your post generated a lot of very good discussion, methinks, so it was a good thing. (Besides, I think I started the whole kit and kaboodle anyway...)

Kelly with a "y" :-) - very good ideas! I do think lots of good things other than good scores happen 'round these here parts. Like Bob posting his shots that he likes from the other day, news about a new Joey DVD (dang kid is too smart for his britches...:-) ) and other stuff like that.

Oh, and Jeb, depending on how things go with your stuff, don't get too worried with not getting 6s all the time. I had a few in row once - started to "expect" to be able to do it again. Didn't happen. Now maybe it will for you, and more power to you if it does, but don't let it bother you if it doesn't. Make sense?

Bravo!! I am guilty of this myself (posting comments but not calling attention to a shot I think is AWESOME) and you're so right, we always could be more awesome, thanks for bringing this to my attention, I will try to do a better job of highlighting the shots I feel are great in the thread!!

Deb
you ask earlier about the gtg i went too Sunday. I met the following dpcers. Mark, drewbixcube, sacredspirit,ladyhawk22, MattO.
We met at the St louis zoo and spent the entire day shooting there, it was awesome. They great people and willing to show beginers like me some new tricks. We ran out of time so we didnt get to shoot it all. after about 6 hrs we were ready to call it a day. Some of us had about 3and a half hr drive to get home. But that just means we can plan another trip to shoot the rest of it. It sounded like they may try for another one later in the summer, i hope they do there is so much neat stuff to shoot in that zoo. i have some shots posted in my protfolio.

I'm going to try to make it.

I'm about two hours away, so I'll consider it a day trip and kinda put it in the definite maybe category if that's okay.

I didn't expect but about a 5.0, I got a hilarious and surprising comment from skewsme and I rarely get picked for a fave.
