Most, if not all of us, have been shocked at what happened at Virginia Tech on Monday. And it makes us all feel so helpless. But the day after the shootings, a beautiful rainbow appeared here in Oregon, the product of an otherwise marvelous planet that produces so much astounding beauty. And the rainbow is the sign of a promise. And a sign of hope. Things we need so desperately. And to somehow do something during this feeling of helplessness in the face of such a tragedy, and as a photographer with little more to give, I photographed this rainbow, and hereby dedicate it to the memory of the lives lost so needlessly, and to the families left behind.

So some people are upset that this same thing has been on TV for the past 3 days but when something happens somewhere else in the world it just gets mentioned then forgotten.

Well, media channels put on what we will watch. I'll be honest...

If 33 people get shot and killed in Virginia, I'm pretty damn likely to be watching this to see what happened, to see what people are saying, and to learn about the guy that did this.

If 43 people die in China from some crazed knife-wielding lunatic, I wouldn't watch it. And I don't think people from China should watch our broadcasts of the stuff that happened here.

The rest of the world is too damn concerned with what happens in the US. Worry about yourselves and we'll worry about ourselves.

The US shouldn't worry about what the rest of the world thinks about it. We're the dominant force in the world but we're so concerned about being politically correct on a nationwide level that we're losing the respect that the other nations have for us.

Sure China, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Korea wants us to change our laws. They're afraid of us. They're intimidated by us.

If we're so big, bad, scary, and violent, quit climbing the fence.

China is bigger,
chances are good there's something badder,
Korea is scary,
violence 's been aroung longer than the US,

but you don't have to climb any fences to enter any "free" countries now, do you?

The Virginia Tech shooting, as tragic as it is, could have happened in Denmark.

Unfortunately, you don't. You don't even have to learn that country's main language anymore. Anyway, that's a story for another day...let's not go there now.

Deapee,

its sayings like your posts that make people think Americans are arrogant assholes. We are not the only dominant force in the world. For starters, I wouldn't want to go up against China. Just to put their population in perspective, they have more honor students in their schools than we do students. They have the population and their economy is on the steep rise. If our repulican government keeps pissing everyone off and destroying every foreign relationship we have, we will be left with no allis and a country with no friends won't be a powerhouse for very long.

the other thread listing the "famous" shootings. Are you alluding to nationality as a cause for this. This seems to me like a lock down our borders type statement. For the record, Cho was an American, legal w/ green card. Besides that, America is all immigrants. Everyone's family came from somewhere else.

ok, this is not really the correct thread for an immigration debate. please keep this thread on topic about VT, or it will be moved to Rant.

some of the more inflammatory posts have already been removed. please do not try to reinsert them into this discussion.

thanks.

Governor of Virginia Tim Kaine has declared today, Friday April 20th, a statewide day of mourning, and has asked that everyone in the Commonwealth observe a moment of silence at 12:00 noon. Your thoughts and prayers will be greatly appreciated, as this tradgedy has affected 1000s and 1000s of lives in many, many different ways on many, many different levels.

This morning, I had an assignment to photograph an observance at a local high school.

Peace be with you all, for you never know what your future holds...

There's orange and maroon everywhere here at UVA. Talk about a show of support!
