this is almost straight from camera, and there are NO filters involved...

here are some clues:
iso3200
f/32
1/320

shot around 4:30pm on a relatively sunny day

Looks like you shot through something held against the lens, or maybe a pinhole in a box.

I don't know if a pinhole would give enough light at that shutter speed, would it?

How about a nylon sock over the lens? Or would that count as a filter? Hmmm.... :)

I considered that also, but the image doesn't seem blurry enough for vaseline. JMO of course. :)

Sometimes they use it just to soften harsh skin, as in the movies/TV/talk shows especially. Off the top of my head I can't remember their names, but I remember reading an article once where it mentioned that certain celebrities would not appear on camera unless it was used on the lenses. I don't think I would want to put it on one of my front elements or even a filter for that matter. But first thing that came to mind.

Fog from breathing against the lens?

Skip, that looks like Alex Jones. . .know who that is and it's more of a challenge than figuring out the effect on the picture!

Looks to me like its a reflection you photographed, glass or mirror, etc....

I was thinking this too, but something less reflective like marble or granite. I say this because of the settings.

Condensation from spraying with "Dust-off" compressed air can?

Hmmm... it could be a reflection on a dark car. There seems to be a smidge of distortion, and hitting a reflection like that might require lots of DOF and a serious ISO setting.

Okay, we know its not Lucy Lieu because she runs from Skip ;)

That was my initial thought too, but I couldn't see any distortion, and it seemed to big an area to have fit on whatever flat surface most cars have.

More likely, he was shooting through some really dark, semi-transparent material like cloth or a black plastic bag.
04/18/2007 03:51:54 PM · #19
Skip is SO good, he probably shot it through the lens cap! ;)

That can't be it. He's an action photographer. He timed it just right so he could get the image reflected off the lenscap as it flipped thru the air (you know, like a coin toss). :D

Wouldn't that need a faster shutter speed than 1/320?

Not as ISO 3200 - besides, it could be a slow flip. :P
